View Full Version : have you guys been having a lot of fake customers with paypal?
MPDon 07-25-2008, 05:09 PM We've been getting a LOT of purchases with stolen paypal accounts. How about everyone else? Is it just us?
If not, has paypal been siding with you or the customer after you purchased a domain with the money they gave you?
MichelleH 07-25-2008, 05:11 PM I haven't had any....
TonyB 07-25-2008, 06:34 PM Just the usual amount nothing really changed.
Only pattern we've seen is referrals from digital point are almost always using a stolen paypal account. Sort of sad really it's a webmaster forum which is now full of fraudulent users.

Yeah our last fraudulent order was referred from digitalpoint.
FIAHOST 07-25-2008, 07:18 PM Not a single issue during the last 4 years of business.
ManobanWeb 07-25-2008, 09:38 PM We've had tons... :@ most from DigitalPoint
We have now been forced to verify most orders...
Rageki-John 07-26-2008, 12:15 AM I've probably had one or two in the last month. Hasn't been too bad for me :).
max777 07-26-2008, 12:28 AM no issue with paypal during last 3 years
MPDon 07-26-2008, 10:13 AM I just bought a Maxmind license and integrated it with our billing script and not even 10 minutes later, our script caught a fraudulent order.
Kudos to you companies that haven't had to deal with this issue.
PCS-Chris 07-26-2008, 11:18 AM We've been getting quite a few, and expect it to increase rapidly with school being out now for the Summer.
There have been a few cases where payments have been disputed the same day, or within the same week that the client signed up. In that case we generally just refund the payment if it's only a few quid as it's not worth the hassle.
Had a pretty major chargeback a month or two ago, customer of 9 months disputed all their payments. As far as we were aware they looked legit, were a good customer etc.. Apparently not!
We use Maxmind with fairly low threshholds and always Manually verify VPS/Dedicated orders as well. Yet a small number still get through.
PEAK-Bobby 07-26-2008, 01:04 PM We have had 2 or 3 in the past week, orders that were paid using Paypal and then they opened a claim for their refund saying the order was made without their knowledge. I think this is a ring of Paypal phishing site accounts that were stolen and starting to be used.
Prolime Servers 07-26-2008, 03:47 PM alot of such cases and 70% of them comes from digitalpoint forums
markhard 07-27-2008, 12:10 PM got 2 fraudulent order within the first month i use paypal, right now i'll only process verified paypal account only to reduce the risk of fraud order.
AClarkTXTS 07-27-2008, 02:27 PM Firedup,
Last week, we had 4 sign-ups using fraudulent PayPal accounts (unauthorized account activity claim) and we usually get none. We just resolved each with a refund and immediately closed the teamspeak server and account. Fortunately the owners of the PayPal accounts noticed the fraud the next day so we did not loose much.
Each one of the IP addresses that activated these accounts came from the same ISP in Brazil. It seems like the same guy or group had acquired the login info for a few PayPal accounts, probably via phishing.
Xaurora 07-27-2008, 02:33 PM I had one in the past.. but not lately.. all though any time someone is paying me with paypal. it's saying they paid like 2k ... not sure what that is from.

Do you use WHMCS? If you are using WHMCS you can get a free copy of Maxmind miniFraud. It's always better to have 2 methods to anti-fraud, automated and manual.
Leandro Xavier 07-31-2008, 11:59 AM Maxmind really works? Is PayPal good to sell web-hosting stuff?
donbiz 07-31-2008, 10:17 PM Yeah, I've got a lot of people buying domains with stolen PayPal in the past and then creating disputes with PayPal.
handsonwebhosting 08-01-2008, 03:17 AM Seeing normal amounts here from PayPal also.. pretty much 4 or 5 per month - not many at all.
All orders are voice verified by staff, so that weeds out most of our fraud anyway.

Not with a creditcard company. You usually have up to 1-2 years after the fact to dispute it; if you have valid reason.

I can speak from experience that Capital One (at least here in Canada) has a limit of 60 days. Personally, I believe no company should offer chargebacks for more than 120 days. The only people who need more are scammers.

We use Maxmind (1000 free checks per month for WHMCS customers) and it works very well. We've only had one fraud order recently (which looked VERY legit) and Maxmind caught it.
jerrymatchel 08-05-2008, 01:48 AM We arent experiencing this ... but thanks for the headsup to keep a lookout.
