I had a customer forward me an email that was sent to him from Yahoo stating
"Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!'s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year."
He transferred 7 domain names to me right after that. Just curious if this is a spoof email. If you go to http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domains/ the price doesn't relect yet. But if you go to http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080519142435AArKumU they appeared to be worried about it as well.
Anybody hear anything on this?

Isn't yahoo a reseller anyway? Somehow they are linked to Melborne IT. Correct me if I am wrong.

I saw that on cnet as well. I suspect they're trying to either extract more money from people who drive the business away from unprofitable segments so they can then sell or dump it.

You are correct. Same applies to Microsoft.

That's is a huge increase. At the new price, anyone who brought 5 domain names from yahoo would end up paying $175 a year.

The type of people who use yahoo as their registrar (small/med biz) are not even going to notice this increase.

O.K., so I have a couple domains more or less parked there (purchased way back when they were practically giving them away). How do I go about moving the registration elsewhere? (Also looking at hosts)

I just transferred 7 names for one our my clients from Yahoo. To do this you need to first find you a host that you can transfer your names to. Second, login to your yahoo control panel for your domains and choose to unlock them. Also take note that each domain name contains a key code that is used for transferring. You can also find this key code in your yahoo domain control panel. Your new host must have those key codes (1 key code per domain) to start the transfer process.
That should get you started.

The small business I deal with had 7 domains. I think he noticed.

I was going to sign up with downtownhost (probably still will - they've been great with the other site I manage), but they charge $15 to transfer a domain. So I looked around here on webhosting talk and decided to move them (the registrations) to namecheap ($9.99 for one, $8.88 for the other).
It says on namecheap that all that is required is that I have access to the admin email for the domains (I checked - I do). So we'll see. :)
But thanks for the reply. I may need that info. :)

uh, yep, needed that info after all. I'm hoping what Yahoo calls the security code is what namecheap calls the EPP code.
thx.

Yes I believe the EPP code is what they call it.
