I'm 17 and I'm trying to run a website. I fell for the Cyberwings.com promotions (good thing I only lost $4). After about a month after they totally went down, I jumped ship to Hostpacket.net. They were getting great reviews here and their prices were great for the amount of bandwidth and space they offered. Well, now my site with them has been down for over 30 hours...

One of my friends reccomended UtopiaHosting (http://www.utopiahosting.com/plans.html). I am very hesitant to try them out right away because I thought I was safe from downtime when I coughed up $65 for hosting. Have any of you had any personal FIRST-HAND experience with this company? Please, none of that "My friend said blah, my dad said dah" stuff. Thanks very much in advance. :)

Oh, and I don't think I need any responses from webhosts. I just want unbiased replies. :stickout

Hey, I'm with you on that one...I figured CW would at least come back up. From what I've heard Shawn fired all the employees and got rid of the volunteers. I'm am also looking for a host now. Short of going to a free host, since I don't have the cash right now. I might just use my domain name and use a free host. It's not cool, but I can't afford $30 a month for hosting!

Don't want to spam or anything, but check this link:
http://www.portland.co.uk/

It's free hosting for a very small site and limited perks...but
it's adequate. I use it as a testing ground for scripts and such.
Nothing fancy, but it's free. You also get 1 MysQl db, ftp access...
might want to check them out.

I kinda need more than 15mb space and 100mb bandwidth, but thanks. :stickout

Looking for 100mb space/5gb bandwidth.

What's thier uptime like? Anyone else here used them? Have they been around longer than a year? LOL...I only ask because Cyberwings has tarnished my idea of ever having a website, but I would like to have one, especially with family and friends being farther away.

I am hearing both things about them. 1st time I head about it, I was tolled that they are good but thee server was a bit slow and a site loads slower then other hosts.

Another person recently said that they are having connection problems to the server, but the server is ok.

Give it a try, if you do not like it, find a good host. For 15MB of webspace and 100MB of transfer you should not be paying much (Let me know if you need hosting :D )

Good Luck. Let me know how it works if you sign up with them.

ha....you must have an account with cw already settup then, right? if not, what's your domain...and how much do you normally charge?

BTW....my choice is between dot5hosting's custom plan or theprimhost's basic plan...pretty darn cheap for thier basic plan

Have you got your money back from CW? We also think that they are now not serious in Hosting business and making others fool. We have paid them approx $250 in last 8months through PayPal. Can you or anyone suggest us, how do we get our money back? We are sending them request for refund since last 15days, but they are not listening. Now their HelpDesk is also closed.

Please help us!

Thanks.

no, I haven't gotten my money back cuz I figured I would wait and see if my account gets setup. I didn't loose that much money compared to other people.

I am seriously looking at theprimehost.com now. Dot5hosting seems great with the customization. I just wish I could change more stuff. I don't need some stuff, but would like more of other stuff, ya know?

A good start is to traceroute a potential webhost and then find out their provider. If it turns out they're running through single connections, or two or three, consider looking elsewhere. Multi homed, redundant providers is what you need if you want any kind of serious uptime.

If for example they run out through Cogent lines, all fine and good. But if that's *all* they have, or a single backup provider then is their cheap price worth the effort of worrying if your site is up?
