View Full Version : Negitiating with RackSpace
Blikje 08-30-2002, 05:15 PM Hi,
Is it possible to negotiate with RackSpace about their prices (to lower them of course). Has someone done this before? A long time ago I read a post about someone who speak with different sales reps and got different quotes. Does any of you have such an experience? And can you give me any tips :D

anantatman 08-30-2002, 05:16 PM i think they're a bit snobby.. ive had better experiences with verio and att than them
Acronym BOY 08-30-2002, 05:24 PM It depends how good you are. I can get the guys at the local Staples to take a few bucks off the papers and pens I buy from them.

What is ATT?
So the Verio people drop the prices more easily?
By the way, if they do lower the price after negotiating, is it possible that you get a mark as customer stating you are not a full paying customer? And that they lack you a little on support?

Well, my negotiating skills are very good. Just needed to know if someone did the trick before...

anantatman 08-30-2002, 05:47 PM negotiating with big companies is usually on the comission that the sales agents get. you're still paying the company what they wanted.
netdude 08-30-2002, 06:00 PM holy sh*t... now that is impressive... i *bow down to you*... :) (i am NOT being sarcastic)... hehe

zerphyte 08-30-2002, 07:00 PM Rackspace doesn't like to budge on prices at all less your willing to spend 5k+/monthly. Standard discount is 4% for 6 month contract 12% for 12 month contract if my memory serves me correctly.

exactly, thats the only time someone will haggle with you. If they really want the sale because they are on commision thwy themselves will take a bit out of their pocket just to make a little instead of making nothing. The company still gets what they would get if the salesman didnt haggle.
jayjay 08-30-2002, 10:31 PM If companies won't work with me, I won't work with them. (Unless it's like $99/mo for a nice box or whatever. I KNOW that it's not going to happen and it's not worth asking for a lexus when you want to pay for a kia.)
In my experience, if someone isn't willing to work with you. They won't value your business in the future. They just aren't hungry. That's ok with me. There's "PLENTY of fish in the sea" as far as bandwidth, rackspace and servers go.
Shop around. Get some prices. Then haggle. Then make the deal.
anantatman 08-30-2002, 10:35 PM well.. there's the us government, and there's the us government. ....
try negotiating contracts with them.. and tell if the same applyes;)
jayjay 08-30-2002, 10:39 PM I don't think we're talking about that. : )
anantatman 08-30-2002, 11:02 PM bottom line is that sometimes you can't negotiate, you just can't say there are other fishes in the sea, because sometimes there aren't.....
how do you deal with verizon? if it takes them 45 days to deliver a t3, you can't tell them to do it faster, and you can't tell them to do it cheaper.
swijaya0101 08-31-2002, 01:31 AM depends on who is the sales person.
few months back, I tried to negotiate with them (around 4-5 sales person) and each person gave me different price.
so, really depends on your luck .... some of the sales person are really nice ... others dont even bother to give you special price
anantatman 08-31-2002, 01:37 AM verizon?
i've tried my luck many many times with many many different people.. verizon is verizon.
monopolies can do whatever they want
jayjay 08-31-2002, 01:58 AM bottom line is that sometimes you can't negotiate, you just can't say there are other fishes in the sea, because sometimes there aren't.....
Ya, like only one person in the whole wide world gets that provider to their datacenter. heh. There's only ONE excellent quality datacenter..
riiiight. Go do your homework.
anantatman 08-31-2002, 03:36 AM it doesn't matter who you get your bandwidth from.
the local telecom company still has to break ground or do whatever it needs to get it in.
thats the monopoly i'm talking about. You can get bandwidth from a billion different places, that's why its so cheap nowadays. You still can't dispute the fact that you have work with a bottleneck like verizon (at least for us here near DC)
Hostkookster 08-31-2002, 03:56 AM I've tried negotiating with Rackspace a couple times as well. I tried 5 times, all with different people.
3 of them refered me to serverbeach.com. Cheap unmanaged servers. The other 2 gave me a %10 discount on the setup fee.
I sent them numerous emails too, (using the "bug em till they crack" negotiating) and i think i finally got on their nerves because they sent an email that basically said there is no point in bending over backward for me to give me a deal if I can't pay the original fees. They feel theres little guarantee that you will stay with them for very long. Theres a flip side for the company - there are lots of fish in the sea for them as well, and chances are people willing to pay those high prices will likely stick around much longer.
If you can reach an agreement with them then Great! Congrats! But its probably not worth your time to try. I wasted several weeks and pretty much got nowhere. :-)

They also referred me too ServerBeach the first time. Not a nice move, since I am looking for a MANAGED dedicated server and serverbeach offers unmanaged. Not so fanatical...
But I will keep trying, at some point they will break (or I will break :D)...

mahinder 08-31-2002, 05:35 AM hey Jacco,
if you want discount then catch somebody like me who already have server with rackspace and signup with them as i referred you and then I will get $500 commission and will give you $400 back.
that will get you some discount ;) :D

m00ds 08-31-2002, 03:40 PM Funny thing happened to me, had a negotiation thing going with one of their sales rep for almost two months. I kept revising the setups that they've given me until the sales rep got tired of me. He even thought that I was a competitor of theirs snooping around for info on their services and pricing.... It was basically an email with attitude requesting me to explain why I kept asking them for amendments to the proposals they've given me. Well, too bad for him, if it wasn't for that final email, I would've probably signed up with them. Went elsewhere instead :D . They won't budge on the pricing, I can tell you from experience...
nawaz 08-31-2002, 07:47 PM I was able to negotiate with rackspace and my service has been nothing but excellent. I have the smallest linux server but they seem to treat me the same as all other customers. Of course I dont know what service others recieve, but I have zero complaints.

Acronym BOY 08-31-2002, 07:55 PM How much are you paying for the AMD 1 GHz?
Wasn't there a posting in here a few months ago. Where if a whole bunch of people signed up at the same time (something like 10 people getting 10 servers?) everybody could get a discounted rate?
I think there are a few other providers who offer similar to what rackspace offer. I'm thinking it may make sense to go with one of them or just go unmanaged and read the freebsd mailing lists a lot. :D
mripguru 08-31-2002, 10:34 PM I'm currently a RackSpace customer and we can always work out pricing between ourselves and our AM (who will remain nameless) to get the best deal. I really appreciate all of the helpful hosting suggestions and pricing breakdowns, etc. that he's given us in the past and hope he will continue to do so in the future.

mripguru 08-31-2002, 10:37 PM I have a RackSpace server as well, and I love it. The service is nothing but excellent. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing reliable uptime and stability.

ho247 09-01-2002, 06:38 AM If you're purchasing more than one server or you're already a customer and requesting an additional server, then they're more flexible on the pricing. If you're looking to stay for 6-12 months, then just look for a current Rackspace customer and ask them to refer you, you'll then get $500 in your account and the person that referred you also gets $500 in their account.

That the current customer who refers me get a bonus I understand, but why do I get a bonus? You mean they give $1000 dollar just for one customer?
Jacco
ho247 09-01-2002, 07:20 AM Yes, I guess they do... but they don't add it to your account until the referred customer has fulfilled 90 days of the contract.

Dwayne 09-01-2002, 07:30 AM what is the setup fee for the linux professional server on rackspace?
