View Full Version : Linux Raid 1 Card
Hi. Im looking for a raid 1 card to place in a new server, (we will have 2 mirrored drives, plus a 3rd internal drive for nightly backups) - I need a simple one that will work with linux (i rather one independant of linux, however those are expensive right)? i need to keep it below $200 or around $100 if possible :)
PS - internal IDE
and redhat 7.X
THanks.
Acronym BOY 08-30-2002, 01:39 PM 3ware rules for IDE RAID. Get a 7000-2 (replaces the 7210, no differences (http://www.3ware.com/products/pdf/Product_Matrix.qk.pdf), just new model number).
I still think you get free shipping from hypermicro if you mention storage review.
Will Redhat 7.3 recognize them, or are they os independant - the os sees only 1 drive?
tilted 08-30-2002, 02:11 PM Agreed on 3ware being nice stuff for IDE RAID. In effect, once you've configured the RAID controller, RH will see the controller as the disk.

Alright. I ordered 3 75G harddrives (IBM 7200 RPM with 3 years Warranty) and a 3ware 7000-2 raid card, overnight should be here tomorow :) We will put it in a server sunday and if its good, we'll buy more :)
ew. after some research, i canceled the order for the IBM hd's (they have a lawsuit against them for those hds) and got 2 Seagate baracuda 40G 7200RPM for $55 each (but only 1 year warranty)
ntwaddel 08-30-2002, 02:46 PM i have a promise sx6000, it does raid 1, 2, 5, and all the other shiz and you can put memory on it. I put a 128meg dimm on mine, and what a difference :D
I had a tyan MB with onboard promise controllers, nothing but trouble. I simply connected the hd and cdrom to the same ide controller (not on the raid lines)

Can you point me to a source for that info please?
Thanks,

"Q: Is this in response to the 75GXP reliability problems?
A: We aren't allowed to comment on that, but if you know what's going on with that, you will understand why.
Q: You mean the lawsuit on the reliability of 75GXP drives?
A: Yes.
Q: So have there been as many failures with the 120GXP as the 75GXP?
A: Not at all, In fact, I haven't heard of any 120GXP failures yet.

3ware owns promise. And since they got rid of the ##10 line and replaced it with the ##50, RAID 5 performance has increased dramatically. And on top of that, there is the new model line out after that, that is ever better. Promise still has many issues with lower end workstation chipsets like the MPX, but works better with higer things like ServerWorks.
And if you want some SCSI stuff, I have some nice Mylex equipment that will tear Promise to shreads.
Next weeks talk...... high point!

The OS will only see one disk. It is a true hardware RAID controller. The only thing is the two port model does not do harware RAID 5 calculations. You will need to spend a little more and get the 4 port model. But since you are doing RAID 1, this card does beat the SX6000 in bechmarks for RAID 1 and 0 and since the ##50 line, 3ware has beat it in RAID 5 as well, going all the way up to 12 drives.
Soulfish 08-30-2002, 08:18 PM So what raid card would people recomend for a Raid 5 setup? I'd like at least a 6ch card to be on the safe side :)
3ware? Promise? Adaptec? who?

3ware is tops in IDE RAID. Beats Promise, High Point, and pretty much anything else.

$135 - hd's and 3ware came today, gonna install tomorow :)
Soulfish 08-31-2002, 08:39 PM Well I've found a place that sells 3ware 7500-8 for the same sort of price as a promise sx6000 + 128mb ram so I'll probably be getting one of those for the next server I order :)
OK, well i go to install the raid today, i placed 3 hds in, 2 seagate baracudas (same models) and 1 maxtor (nightly backup)
the 3ware kept listing one of the seagates as unavailable :( So i decided to use the maxtor as the 2nd raid drive instead. fine.
Then i go to install redhat, and i find the floppy drive on teh server is no good, os it wont read teh driver disk :( - i searched for a floppy but no success. Now i have taken the machine home.
Im in the middle of testing the hd's from software by seagate and maxtor but so far they all passed the basic and recertification test...
anyone know why the 3ware would list a drive as unavailable?
Its a pre-smart drive so smart isnt enabled - could that do it?
Im sorry, the dirve was listed under
Incomplete drives
do you know waht that means?
the other 2 work fine - all the hd's passed recertification tests

that card looks pretty pimp
Aright, got it all up and running very well. THeir browser based tools are cool, i wish they had command line ones for automation...
anyway, one of the 40G seagates was bad (some crap about superblock? even tho it passed all the tests) so we put a 40G seagate and a 40g maxtor as the raid mirrors, and a spare 20G maxtor as the nighlty backup drive and the non-functional 40G seagate will go back for a replacement.
Thank you all.
