View Full Version : Who Is Giving Away The Big Ticket Item This Year?
e-onlinedata support 07-18-2008, 03:03 PM I heard a mention that BobCares Hosting was drawing for a Harley :) (Which I'll be driving home) I know that DedicatedNow is giving
away a Chumby (http://www.chumby.com/),
Is anyone else drawing for a big ticket item? :)

chicagohost 07-31-2008, 03:54 PM who won the Harley? I should have attended if I knew there was free Harley
Douglas 07-31-2008, 04:22 PM There was a lot of controversy surrounding the Harley giveaway... and to be honest, I personally thought it was not handled well, at all.
I feel sorry for everyone that entered the drawing. And before anyone yells at me... no, I didn't enter the drawing.
But no one won the bike.
chicagohost 07-31-2008, 06:05 PM What happened? How come no body got it, if it was a giveaway.
Douglas 07-31-2008, 06:24 PM Since I have a fancy Liaison title, I've sworn to behave myself, so I'll let someone else rant about it... but let's just say that there's a few hundred of us that are less than amused by this.
the_pm 07-31-2008, 08:06 PM What happened? How come no body got it, if it was a giveaway.Five people were chosen to select keys from a jar. The jar held 250 keys total. So each person had roughly a 1/250 chance of winning the bike (the 5th person had the best odds, unless the keys were put back into the jar after being picked to keep the odds the same).
It definitely would have been cool to see that Harley come to life, but it was not to be. And so it is :)
jayglate 07-31-2008, 09:18 PM I got 10 tickets and didn't even get called!!! Doh!!!
Ronald_Craft 07-31-2008, 09:48 PM Are you serious? A give-away that nobody won? That's pretty terrible. It would be like winning the lottery only for the state to say, "Oh right, we don't actually have any money to give you. You weren't really supposed to win anyway..."
I'm glad I wasn't there.
nimbar 07-31-2008, 10:31 PM Are you serious? A give-away that nobody won?
Can you believe that I had the ticket 290129... two numbers, just two and I would have gotten the magic key... I am not a lucky guy, lol.
At the end I was like... ohhh what happens?, nobody won?, what?!!.
Greetings.

Well it is more like giving away a lottery ticket and say, give me you contct to spam you and you get chance to win 100 Million.
Thats not a bad idea. I am going to do it next year. I am going to give away $100 Million at next year hostingcon. The Lucky winner get a spanking new lottery ticket. Its patented. don't steal my idea.
N|Kitmitto 08-01-2008, 02:30 AM Maybe the Harley was cardboard... did you guys actually touch it?
MACscr 08-01-2008, 03:16 AM I just got a call and found out I won a laptop from one of the vendors. Need to call them tomorrow to find out what kind it is. Woo hoo!
Last year I had my name drawn for a macbook pro, but i was still in the lunch room and had to be present to win, so i missed out. That was disappointing to say the least. I missed it by like 20 mins and my friends didnt let me forget that. =P
UH-Matt 08-01-2008, 05:44 AM That Harley was never going to be given away.... a chance in 250.... pfft.

The harley "giveaway" terms were not clear to us until explained at the draw... certainly many felt a little conned, but this method is common. I wish I would have known it was an insurance draw, then I wouldn't have bothered registering even. The chance to win is the key to the whole draw one key from 250 thing - that's how these insurance draws are run - and I guess if you see the word "chance" - you should know...bah!
However - the wife won a 50 inch TV from TheWhir.com - so thanks to them!!
the_pm 08-01-2008, 09:48 AM I didn't have any problem with the terms of the Harley Giveaway, but I'd heard about the terms in advance, and the press I did read about it indicated "a chance to win" and did say contestants would select from an assortment of keys. I don't really have a problem with how the contest was conducted, but the result of no one winning was anti-climactic.
Ronald_Craft 08-01-2008, 10:08 AM They could at least give some anon-e-mouse and SWR life-sized posters as collateral :P :)

it is certainly VERY important that the terms are clear - I recently never bothered entering a draw for a Corvette, because I incorrectly ASSUMED it was a 'chance to win' - and I think the word chance was actually used in the promotional verbiage - however it REALLY WAS a genuine draw in which a 2008 corvette WAS GIVEN AWAY - they only had 400 or so entries and the car was given away to an entrant who had exactly the same chances I WOULD HAVE HAD.
Regardless of the prize - it's actually seeing someone win that has the biggest amount of thrill (or at least I think so) - when all the hoopla results in a "sorry folks - see you all next year" - the anti-climax is altogether deflating... again, just my point of view - but I am sure the promotion was a success - I'd rather see someone win a laptop though (and it not be me even), than 5 people NOT win a Harley.... oh well - perhaps next year if someone runs a "chance to win" - we'll get a winner?!?!?
just another thought.. to remove the deflation factor - how about having the 5 "winners" draw their "consolation" prize AFTER the harley key draw... at least you would have them leaving having "won" something - unless the terms indicate it must be run that way with zero deviations... just having someone take a PRIZE at the end instead of the "sorry - you key is not a winner" - you get... "and even though your key doesn't win... draw from this box and see what you HAVE won...!!!"
just a thought.
MACscr 08-01-2008, 03:29 PM Well, just found out that the laptop I won is a Asus Eee PC 4G. So not an expensive macbook pro or anything, but I definitely cant complain since its free! Thanks DNAMail! =)
the_pm, I got lucky on this one, didnt have to be present to win. =P
