I'm considering creating a service similar to the "Add/Remove Programs" applet in Control Panel, but for CGI scripts. Basically you'd create an account on my site, choose a script to install, put in your hosting information and it'd more or less upload/chmod/configure the script automatically. I was also considering including a listing service for those who want real humans to install scripts for them too (they might not trust a PHP script logging on to their account).
Is there a need for such a service? Has it already been thought of? Is there enough non-knowledge about running a web site where this would be beneficial?

I dont know if this is an innovation or not but its definately a very good idea particularly for those who want different scripts to run on their websites but do not have time or knowledge to implement it. It would be a great service to them. I highly recommend you to go forward and do a good job with it :D

I think there's enough "non-knowledge about running a web site" about where this could be usefull.

I think this would be extremely helpful to your customers.
I have a handful of clients that do not know how to manage, install, maintain, create etc a script. Something like this would be ideal for them.
Good luck with it.

Times changing and i think more and more ppl are getting aware of this industry and as far as running the website is concerned, i agree to the fact that there is enough ignorance, but 1 can bring in the innovations for the betterment of the industry as a whole ;)

:D
I for one fit smack in the middle of the target demographic.
I have a few sites for personal, hobby and work.
My last computer class was in college 1983 or so. We made pie charts vis basic I think it was (CRS setting in)
But I hack around code by looking at it and messing it up. I have had success installing most scripts. But as I move up and want nicer sites I have started to get into shareware scripts. I'd pay a few dollars for this install service. Off the top of my head I'd pay $5-25 bucks for a script I liked. I'd probably pay $5-15 to have it installed.
(just thinking out loud folks) If it was automated via a script I'd be glad to shoot 5 bucks via paypal :). If there was a human doing the service with skills. I assume it would take a short while for them to do it. (I know how long it takes me ) I'd pay the bit more. I would expect it up and running in a pretty reasonable time. Say max one bizness day.
Hope that helps

Perhaps. :) I'll need to code the whole thing first though. :D
