Anyone have anything good/bad to say about Hurricane Electric? I’m thinking about moving my gear there.

Thumbs UP
We have our gear there, every bit of it, that's on the west coast anyway.....

Nothing but love for www.he.net

Whatever it is, its fast :) I've gotten over 10mbps downloads from remote sites, which is pretty amazing IMO. Ping times to the west coast are generally great, with the exception being some bad routing that started recently. Recently some people in SoCal are being routed through HE's NYC node. This wasn't always the case, so hopefully its temporary. I already e-mailed tech support about it and they said they'd look into it.

They were really great, but I think they have slipped a litte because of thier growth. I do still think they are a decent provider.

Let's hope they can pick that up again. Most companies go through patches like that.

they are good, they just need to add a couple of more guys working on SPAM/UCE problems ;)

I'll start with good things:
+ they have their own national backbone connected to multiple exchange points across the country;
+ their network is pretty good overall (I have colocated one of my servers with them);
+ you can always call them and someone will answer the phone (most of the time, someone helpful);

Now to bad things:
- they have a MAJOR spam problem -- i.e. they host a lot of spammers and writing to abuse@he.com is next to useless. I was a bit sceptical myself until I started receiving porn spam right from their IP space advertising bunch of porn sites in their IP space too. I have written to abuse@he.com, postmaster@he.com and support@he.com about five times in the past two weeks. Never received any reply.
- they had three major network downtimes of several hours in the past several months; apparently it was a DDoS attack each time;
- they are very slow (12-48 hours) when responding to tech.support e-mails, even if it's an urgent reboot request; my guess it's because they are swamped with spam complaints (see above);

Bottom line, I kind of regret that I had signed a 12 month contract with them -- I would not done it if I knew what I know now. :(

I though email should be @he.net and not .com

Hurricane Electric is an unrepentant spamhaus, and currently have large portions of their netblocks listed in SPEWS, as well as countless other blacklists both private and public. Their willingness to support spammers operating directly from within their network is well-known, and complaints of spam to their abuse department are ignored completely.

yeah that's the only downside of their operations... I wish they could pay more attention to spam and stop hosting spammers.....

but other than that they are good

peteny> I think he means that what you said was unclear. "don't use them" could mean "I don't use them" or "do not use them" depending on how you interpret it. It's a little ambiguous... hey, we all do it sometimes :)

No, but when you say things and no one has a clue what you are saying it helps if you can use something a little bit closer to proper English so that way we can understand the concept you are trying to convey to the rest of us.

Or we could all just sit here and babble incoherently.

Sorry, of course it was @he.net -- I got all the e-mails right from their site. And I get a claim ticket number from support@he.net every time I write to it. But no humans responded ever.

Just got another porn spam message from the same spammer from Hurricane Electric's IP space. I guess it's another round of e-mails to them. I'm probably going to set up an automated forward rule in my mail client, will see if that would help.

We manage a server for a client at HE and when we asked for some additional IP's, they were DOA. It took a whole day of contacting them and waiting for them to re-route them properly to the right switch port so we could finally use them.

We also manage servers at AboveNet/MFN and tech requests like this get handled in 10 or 15 minutes

After setting up the auto-forward I got a reply from their Abuse Department within days, saying that they are going to take measures against the offending party. Well, now I know what to do the next time I get spam from Hurricane Electric IP space.

Almost their entire IP space is listed in SPEWS right now.

I'd avoid them like the plague. I'm routing about 22 servers' mail through my san diego server just to deal with their spam problem.

If they hire 4-5 clued in spam fighters they could clean up their act and be a really strong choice.

You are right - they need to hire people that will deal with their spam!:)
