View Full Version : cPanel & DA Offerings? - Ideas?
SkylarMacMinn 07-12-2008, 03:15 PM Ok well I have been offering shared and reseller cPanel for a while now, and have considered offering the same specs but on the order form give them the option for either cPanel, or DirectAdmin as their control panel.
Good idea? Suggestions? Thoughts?
AH-Tina 07-12-2008, 09:43 PM Sure, why not?

Rageki-John 07-12-2008, 10:15 PM Yeah, sure why not? I'm offering DirectAdmin right now and I plan on offering cPanel in the future :).
HostingFuze 07-12-2008, 10:50 PM When I was doing shared/reseller hosting about 3 years ago, we tried doing DirectAdmin and only sold about 4-5 accounts per month. The market has changed dramatically, so it may be worth a shot. Good luck either way!
teachforjune-Scott 07-12-2008, 11:04 PM What do you think was the barrier with directadmin?
Do you think it was lack of name-recognition, perceived lack of features, unfamiliarity?
Do you have any ideas?

It is probably unfamiliarity. Most people have heard of it, but cPanel accounts sell much better and usually end up with less support inquires. It's most likely because cPanel is used by more host, so the client will have a better background using it.

Yeah but I think DirectAdmin started becoming popular when many realized that it was similar to cPanel, cheaper, and less of a resource hog. Overall, I personally enjoy using DirectAdmin and never plan on going back to cPanel. The only involvement I would have with cPanel is selling cPanel hosting to clients.
webresellers 07-15-2008, 09:32 PM We have multiple servers with various hosting interfaces, and offer the customer the choice of the interface they would like to use. This works great for us.
teachforjune-Scott 07-15-2008, 09:38 PM That's what we do. What's your percentage of cpanel vs da?
webresellers 07-15-2008, 10:12 PM cPanel is at least 70% the other 30% us LXadmin, Plesk, DA.
teachforjune-Scott 07-15-2008, 10:35 PM I think that depends on the country you're hosting in. DA is more popular in CA and there are others that are popular in other countries. You may be right if you're basing only in the US. And I think the LXAdmin is in the vast minority compared to DA, Plesk, HSphere.
webresellers 07-15-2008, 10:51 PM LXAdmin with HyperVm is a winning combination for the price.... aprox .50 cents USD per VPS. Yes, we are USA based hosting, but we provide services internationally.

I notice that a lot of people who want a cheaper option for a VPS typically go with LxAdmin. It is a very basic upfront panel that is easy to use, and doesn't use a lot of resources.
Teslix 07-16-2008, 05:34 AM DA is becoming more and more popular definitely nowadays. Anyhow, you can always put one DA VPS up and start filling it with customers. If DA doesn't sell well, you can keep customers on a VPS (to minimize your cost), in case it does sell simply move them to dedicated server.
As somebody mentioned, DA has potential nowadays as it is more recognized and far more popular then it was few years ago. It's still behind cPanel but since it is cheaper and requires less resources every day more users are being attracted by it.

It's not as far behind as it used to be. An update was just released the other day for DA and it now supports Awstats. Awstats was supported before via DA plugin but now it's a default feature and you can choose to either enable Awstats or Webalizer. It's still in Beta testing though.
MikeDVB 07-19-2008, 04:02 AM The more options you give your customers, the better.
I've actually found the opposite to be true - the less options you give them the easier it is for them to decide to sign up with you.
People don't like making decisions... well... most of them don't and they want the process to be as simple and painless as possible.
