View Full Version : Something like Rackspace? (similar competitors)
Hi,
I have a client who I am developing a fairly large website for, he invisions this site creating a lot of traffic and wants a managed dedicated server.
Although it'll still be a while before the website is finished, I'm already looking for different solutions. Since I (will be) offer(ing) virtual hosting to my clients, I was thinking of moving my hosting business to a dedicated server and offer him a very large package with the option to upgrade to his own dedicated server. This way I have my own dedicated server to run my hosting business and he doesn't have to plunk down tons of cash on a managed dedicated server. ->Basicially splitting the dedicated with him.
To my question:
I've looked at couple of dedicated providers and Rackspace ($250 -> FreeBSD, AMD 1G, 256RAM, 20GB HD, 30GB B/W) seems a good value considering the uptime and support. Is there any others like this? Any direct competitors to Rackspace with the same features, 99.9999% uptime, fanatical support?
The other concern is that I would need a Control Panel for my hosting customers (because it seems everybody else is offering them :))
I would probably use HSphere (since rackspace -> costs $1-2 per domain). One of the problems with HSphere is that it doesn't have enom support (I realize this is a minor issue but still something irritating ;)) and seems almost too automated for my taste. I think WHM/CPanel may be a better solution, but at a cost of $100/month additionally.
Thanks for any advice. :D
GeorgeC 08-29-2002, 04:23 PM Vario seems to be in the same league as Rackspace, though between the two I'd definitely still go with Rackspace.
clocker1996 08-29-2002, 04:32 PM it's verio* LOL
but yeah, verio is good for managed, expensive too :)
citrus 08-29-2002, 04:37 PM I think pwebtech does something in the way of managed servers. In my opinion they are very similar to RackSpace in terms of quality.
Their site is http://www.pwebtech.com (Although I must say it is very out of date, I suggest you contact Jay (WHT username: jayglate)
Good luck in your search...:cartman:

Isn't that a Vaio? :stickout
Dedicated 08-29-2002, 04:55 PM pwebtech.com excellent uptime and support. I agree with citrus about their website.
I can recommend Webreseller.net, they have excellent uptime. And, very good support.
jayglate 08-29-2002, 05:12 PM Thank you guys all so kind :)
And we have a new killer website almost done being designed right now. Stay tuned for the new redone pegasus :)
Jedito 08-29-2002, 05:22 PM I'm pretty happy with Venturesonline.com.
Their averange suppor ticket response (at least with me) its less than 20 min.
They do offer WHM/Cpanel as well, but they do not offer H-Sphere :(.
mdrussell 08-29-2002, 05:44 PM Pwebtech is pretty good - haven't tried their managed service but with a master monkey like Jay around, I'd presume it to be impressive.
Another one to look at is http://www.dialtone.com
Thanks.
pwebtech:
I've seen their site but some of the links don't work and it's been like that for a while now. :(
$225 700MHZ P III 128 Ram 20GB HD 50GB BW vs. $250 AMD 1G, 256RAM, 20GB HD, 30GB B/W?
BTW, are they fully managed? 24 hour support?
Verio: is really expensive.
It seems like rackspace has a pretty good deal going for the price. For me, the most important feature is reliability. I don't want to embarrass myself with downtime. ;)
More links please :)
Contact Pwebtech about prices. Their website isn't up to date. And, it hasn't been.
BTW: I also think the Pwebtech is pretty good.

If the most important feature is reliability, I don't think you can go wrong with Rackspace. This is speaking from experience.
p.s: I should just keep my mouth shut on Verio now :D
jayglate 08-29-2002, 05:49 PM Our website is severly outdated. So if you need info icq/email me.

mdrussell 08-29-2002, 05:49 PM And they do have people onsite 24/7. I've called at some strange times before
ho247 08-29-2002, 06:47 PM Obviously I'll recommend Rackspace as first choice, but if you really do want someone cheaper but with similar features/quality then Dialtone Internet (http://www.dialtone.com/) should be your second choice.

Same here, Venturesonline.com is a good choice.
mahinder 08-30-2002, 05:02 AM rackspace.com is the best specially if you need fanatic support and 100% uptime. You will not get such fanatic support anywhere. Once I submitted ticket in emergency category and got response within 3-4 minute. Yeah within 3-4 minutes and they started working right away and the problem was fixed within next 10 minutes (minor problem).
Pwebtech is at nac.net and they seems to be having wonderful uptime, jay from pwebtech is extremely helpful guy. Don't go on their website (anyway, look unprofessional) but you will get good price/uptime/support ratio. Contact jay through aim and ask him for speical offer.
Have also heard many good things about dialtone internet and there offers are tempting, I guess they offer server for $150 / month with there own control panel software included. I haven't heard anything bad about dialtone's uptime. I guess they also have 100% uptime and good support.
