View Full Version : Domain Whois Information
kshego 08-29-2002, 03:20 PM I currently have my own nameservers with the company I resell webhosting with. Is there a way to change the information that appears when a Whois search is ran on my domain name? I want it to appear that my domain name and company is also a registrar if that is possible...Am I making any sense whatsoever??? :D
Thanks for the help...
Synthetic 08-29-2002, 03:27 PM I don't think it's possible ( ), nor legal to do that.
ffeingol 08-29-2002, 03:38 PM kshego,
It can be done, but your registrar has to "do it". eNom does that if you are an eNom reseller. check out the whois for domainmaze.com. It should say something like "registration by: domainmaze.com".

insider_hush 08-29-2002, 07:40 PM not acording to this:
Whois Server Version 1.3
Domain names in the .com, .net, and .org domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.
Domain Name: DOMAINMAZE.COM
Registrar: ENOM, INC.
Whois Server: whois.enom.com
Referral URL: http://www.enom.com
Name Server: DNS1.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Name Server: DNS2.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Name Server: DNS3.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Name Server: DNS4.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Name Server: DNS5.NAME-SERVICES.COM
Updated Date: 11-jun-2002
>>> Last update of whois database: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 16:57:35 EDT <<<
The Registry database contains ONLY .COM, .NET, .ORG, .EDU domains and
Registrars.
**complete**
ffeingol 08-29-2002, 07:54 PM Yea, looks like eNom broke it again :(

Please note that if you are using your name in
my enom
contact info/setting
If no organisation is set, it will be shown as enom in default. Oh my god, I contact enom, but they reply no possible to change this.
If you set up sub-account, it will be enom not under yours unless you get your reseller account directly from enom i.e. paid deposit to enom.com
I hope this can help you!

Bannaz 08-30-2002, 07:06 AM Don't think it is possible. You can change what the whois appears on someones own whois system, but that is configured in their own database, not on the worldwide whois.
thewitt 08-30-2002, 09:29 AM You will never appear as the Registrar, since the actual registar is needed so that the distributed whois model will work.
Look up your domain at internic.net and I don't care who eNom shows as the reseller, it will be eNom as the registrar.

ag-webdesign 08-30-2002, 10:47 AM In some of the whois records for direct enom resellers there is things like:
Contact: host@wwonders.net
Visit: http://dotjunction.com
In the whois record.
It appears that this does not happen for sub-resellers, I can not also anyway in the CP of setting this sort of information.

blob2 08-31-2002, 10:00 AM The ICANN accredited registrar who controls the whois database can add pretty much anything they want to their whois system, so its possible to have your reseller URL in the whois info if the registrar you resell for supports it in their whois system.
apollo 09-01-2002, 04:51 PM yes, enom and opensrs supports this...
name-
contact-
records on whois record
thewitt 09-01-2002, 05:02 PM Based on the original question however, it's important to know that the reseller data added by a registrar is in addition to identifing themselves as the registrar in the formal whois output, not as a replacement of the actual registrar.
A typical identification section for Tucows/OpenSRS looks like this:
Registration Service Provider:
myOstrich Internet Services, domains@myostrich.net
http://www.myostrich.net
Registrar of Record: TUCOWS, INC.
Record last updated on 21-Mar-2002.
Record expires on 17-Apr-2005.
Record Created on 17-Apr-2001.
Note that we are clearly identified as the Registration Service Provider, however Tucows is also clearly identified as the Registrar.

ffeingol 09-01-2002, 07:18 PM I agree totally with thewitt. eNom's looks exactly the same:
Registration Service Provided By: FLFSoft, Inc.
Registrar: ENOM, INC.
Frank
Internic's whois will always display the ICANN accredited registrar. However most of the whois systems will display your company name as the registrar:
Registration Service Provided By: Premier World Ltd.
