View Full Version : Can I really make money selling web hosing
Luke101 07-09-2008, 01:51 AM Hello,
I see that there are a whole lot of web host providers on the internet. So the question I am getting at is -- is the market too saturated to start a web hosting company.
GNAX - Terrence 07-09-2008, 02:01 AM Yes you can, but you will need to invest your own money or find an investor 1st.
sTag-Dan 07-09-2008, 03:41 AM Having money to invest doesn't necessarily mean you'll make money. You need to be in/do something that you have a passion for and work hard at it. Even that doesn't always make you successful. You don't sound too committed nor dedicated to what you're about to do. If you're in it for only the $, then I suggest not getting into the market as you'll regret it in the end. Good luck :)

Insightful explaination by sTag-Dan.
I've recently started [my web hosting company], and it's still a long way to go despite having traffic but 0 sign ups so far, been around for about 2 weeks now.
it's easy to open a shop, but it's hard to keep it open. the art of every business is how to survive the competition.
Dan_EZPZ 07-09-2008, 05:18 AM Unless you can do something very different from the competition you will just blend into everyone else.
It can take a very long time to earn a decent amount of money from hosting, but if you find a niche then you stand a much better chance.
Rageki-John 07-09-2008, 06:33 AM Like others have said it's easy to start a web hosting business but it's hard to maintain one. In the web hosting business patience is key. Don't come in expecting to get clients from every advertisement you post. You can't expect to profit within the first few months. If your lucky, you'll be able to start profitting within 6 months after your grand opening. Make sure you learn as much as possible about the servers even if your using a reseller as you'll probably run a server in the future. Be extremely polite to your customers and try to service them in a mannerly fashion. Make time for your customers and try your best to keep your support responses within 6 hours ;). There's a lot more to say but I'm too tired to list them all. If you need anymore tips just PM me and I'll be glad to help :).

This is true!! :)
outposter 07-09-2008, 09:54 AM Preseverance Pays!! Thats the lesson we have learnt after 3 years in the business. Pay attention to providing good customer service, a robust infrastructure and you'll see sucess. All the best.

ldcdc 07-09-2008, 11:51 AM Making money should be easy enough. Making a living, would be quite a different thing. ;)
is the market too saturated to start a web hosting company.I don't think there's ever such a thing, in any market. You just have to be special in some way, and put your message out there to win customers over. If you're better than your competitors, you can win the game.
spacehosting 07-09-2008, 11:40 PM I was trading over a year got 17 customers in a month from just msn, mirc, forums without any paid advertising just long hours infront of the keyboard.
Now my new bussiness paid out £100 on advertising and its getting no where.
So they is money in it just tactics first.
Aussie Bob 07-10-2008, 09:57 AM . . . is the market too saturated to start a web hosting company.
Yes, everyone stay away. :)

Thanks Dan! by 'niche', it gives me the idea to promote the hosting to say 'school' which gives graphics design course. maybe can ask the teachers to be our affiliates
WO Mark 07-12-2008, 04:07 AM The thing is, there may be a lot of hosts on the Internet - but people using the Internet is rapidly increasing day by day. Alot of people tend to advertise on WHT and expect sales, but what you need to remember is that probably 90% of members on here are actually hosts or staff members. As a few others have said, you need to find a niche, maybe approach your local business' and schools?
dbbrock1 07-12-2008, 05:06 PM Yes there is always room for another web host. That being said, if you are like the other 10,000 hosts out there, you will not get your dues. Ive been in this business for over 6 years and have been pretty successful so far. But that was a mix of good luck and hard work. If you work at your business every day, you will get sign ups. Theres no doubt in my mind about that. You just need to WORK. It wont happen over night and it wont happen by itself.
bostonhoster 07-13-2008, 01:46 AM Excellent advise: Find your own niche. The fact is that there are a thousand niches out there. So yes there is money to made if you find the right niche.
Griffin012cgh 07-13-2008, 08:42 PM you can always start. but its keeping it alive is the hard part. Expect to be in the hole for about 6 months :+ if you work hard you can get it to pay for itself!
hostmyserver 08-03-2008, 10:31 AM Hello,

theres always room for hosting companies, as the market is there. its all about doing it right, like a resturant. either you get bankrupt or you gain money..
i might would have started reselling or invest money into other business. as its expensive to start a new company.
ForumsAddict 08-03-2008, 12:57 PM If I were starting new,, Id rather buy a 4 to 5 year old company then to start fresh unless I had a unique idea no one else was trying.

sounds smart enough but then you have all, if any, bad press that goes with that company.
