View Full Version : new country domains, what to register first
placebo 07-07-2008, 07:16 PM Hello,
Assuming a new country gtld is available (ex .de or similar), what would be the first domains of interest to register?
What are the most valuable domains to have in a new gtld?
nameslave 07-07-2008, 07:27 PM Sex and drugs and rock and roll. Okay, just sex, I mean sex.tld would sure be the most sought after for sure.
placebo 07-07-2008, 07:35 PM That was my first choice, together with porn of course.
My list includes also mp3. travel. and some other,
Any other valuable domain that you remind of?
Syd_M 07-07-2008, 08:02 PM .travel already exists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.travel). :)
.sex tld would definitely be popular, but I'm not sure whether it'll ever become a reality considering that ICANN shot down the .xxx tld suggestion a while back. Of course, that was before ICANN opened the doors to all sorts of tlds. Guess it's anything goes now. ^^
Which kind of bugs me. TLDs should retain a certain amount of exclusivity; its a little like people each creating their own town so that can use a My Town address... some kind of logical addressing should exist. Seems that ICANN is (like all of us) trying desperately to think of new avenues of income!

placebo 07-08-2008, 02:31 AM thank you guys, I am writing all the suggested domains :)
hotels, home, loans, finance, mail.. you can pick up a dictionary and register all generic names from that!!
That quite depends on the language of the country the ccTLD is in. All the english word suggestions here could be quite worthless in certain countries (but still nice to have if you could grab them)
Syd_M 07-08-2008, 02:39 PM Hmm... I wonder whether Internationalized Domain Names — such as the following ICANN test site in Japanese: http://例え.テスト/ — will ever really take off. If you couple that with ICANN's opening of the domain name arena, the domain name industry could go through quite a revolution! I predict exciting times are ahead for domainers.
-PS- For info and further examples of IDN, visit http://idn.icann.org/. ^^
Syd_M 07-08-2008, 07:15 PM I just realized that we're going far off field. The OP's original question was concerning ccTLDs. Which makes me wonder, are there any potential ccTLDs up for grabs? The current list (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country_code_top-level_domain#List_of_ccTLDs) seems to have almost every country.
As a domain investor, I'd choose the 2 most widely accepted cctlds, .co.uk, and .de. Possibly also .us

The good thing about ccTLDs is, you can topple some REALLY SMALL island *countries* at a cost significantly lower than that for acquiring a generic .com like hotels.com. That is also why I never plan to invest seriously in any .tv domain, for instance.
And yes, the OP is talking about the part BEFORE the dot, NOT after that.

My interpretation of his post is that he's talking about both: 1) what new ccTLD could be available, and b) what domain you would want to register with that new ccTLD.
I'm not sure what countries don't yet have an associated ccTLD (there're probably some, but I can't think of any off the top of my mind), but for any domain to be successful with a ccTLD, it'll probably have to a vanity domain (like del.icio.us) or would be serving a niche market (like last.fm). Unique, memorable and creative combinations would have good value, I think — maybe even over the usual tried and true TLDs. It's hard to come up with a winner using that method, though, as it seems to be mostly hit or miss.

... but ccTLDs are created to serve individual countries, that's why many (if not most) of them are successful in their own homeland. Of course, we are talking about countries that are at least a little bit larger than New Orleans, not those small islands in the Pacific.
What's wrong with those small islands in the pacific? Besides the island which is sinking. The name escapes me. :)

Those tiny "countries" are way too small to support their own ccTLDs in a market economy. Countries like Germany or Canada, on the other hand, have subtantial domestic demand to support a healthy growth curve.

Correct,
I am talking about the .al domains. It may sound strange, but till yesterday, you could only register a domain that is your brand, or represents a company name.
Since yesterday, everyone can register any .al domain (you have to be Albanian citizen, or need to have commercial presence in Albania).
(The registration is not automatical, you have to file a request, get an approval for the name and then pay)
Any other suggestions :)
I tried something like the deli.icio.us, but I did not find any good one. Apparently only bad words end with .al (an.al, fek.al, brut.al :) )
Syd_M 07-09-2008, 11:21 AM Too bad that registration is limited for the .al ccTLD. There are some good words that can be used with .al, such as: art.ifici.al, pun.ctua.al, uni.vers.al, etc. :)

Oh, man. If you go the del.icio.us route, .al is actually VERY GOOD, with TONS of not only adjectives but also nouns out there (at least in the English language).
placebo 07-09-2008, 11:29 AM We can register them for you. The domains will appear under our hosting company name and we will sign an agreement with you.
In the future, it is expected that .al domains will be sold through Registrars. If so, our company will be one of the first registrars of .al.
