View Full Version : How long until your business was self supportive?

Here's a good question - one that hasn't been posted before and one that is surely on the minds of many new hosts.

Although there's differences in our lifestyle costs, location, and the services we sell (to some degree), I have to wonder for many - how long was it until your company was supporting your lifestyle? ie: you left your day job (or if you dived right into operating a company full time, how long until that supported you?).

I'm looking forward to seeing the responses - and I hope to hear that business is going well for you.

Started the business around the lines of 2001.

I would say started being self-supportive around 2005.

I would be further interested in seeing how many web host businesses out there are providing the primary income for a household family.

I started in 2000 and within 3 or 4 months we were profitable. By about 6 months of operations we covered all the debt we took on to start up. I was very lucky and had a lot of contacts I was able to reel in once I had my own hosting company.

Fused became self-supporting within a year of launch. Initially that was very meager support -- but paying as well as my daytime job at the time. We've now increased quite a bit in size & I've just recently added the brother on payroll. Next week we're adding my Dad. :)

Started in 2003 while I was finishing up my University degree and by the time I graduated in 2005 it was self supportive. Quit school to focus on the business full time rather than going for my Masters/PhD and profits now greatly exceed any wage I'd receive in the field I was attending school for. Can't be happier!

Unfortunately Jesus didn't pop over to give us a hand, at that time I was nearly at tears because of location moves, hardware failure, and no money. The same way he didn't help the Chinese in the earthquake and many natural disasters before that. However, I'd say 2 years in I was getting a modest wage. To date I am getting a very good wage, and I hope when we hit expansion I can retire!

Well, it's great -- but at the same time they're not as technically inclined as I'd like. They both do enjoy the industry though, surprising as I don't ;)

I never knew that Jesus worked in the hosting field. Does he provide 100% uptime? :D

It seems that Jesus isn't following the overselling model. :D

My host is new, but in the long term I want it to at least provide half of my income, preferably all.

However, the market has so many big players in it now, it seems an impossible task.

Interesting (to me) to read my 2002 WHT reply to a very similar question here (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?p=293526#post293526).

Since I posted that six years ago, the same phenomenon on a larger scale has happened at least twice. First when we migrated our storage architecture to fibre-channel SAN in 2003/2004, and now this year as we purchase our own condo office space.

I would say that hosting was profitable from month 1 for us, however it is a small part of our business and we have our focus elsewhere...We were lucky to catch a growing niche market and basically didn't have to spend any money in advertising.

Not self supporting, but hope to get enough admin/sales, etc for my wife to work from home soon...:)

Me & My business partner have both been in the industry for years, never worked togeather but known eachother a long long time and only 25miles sepperate us, so we were chatting away one day and i had an idea of starting a VPS company as we both have alot of experience in this field from previous employment in the industry, Alas VPS Empire was born, this was a little over 1 month ago we launched the company and already we have an income of around $15,000per year. Many say this is a lie, if there was a way we could prove it without people accusing us of "Doctoring" screenshots etc we would. We hope that at the continued rate we will be 100% self-supporting by the end of this year. We already cover our resource bills twice over and at this moment in time we could begin to "Dip" the pot however chose not to our pot is simply growing and growing by the day and we hope within the next 3/4 months we will be able to move into larger premesis and open up more offices with more employee's worldwide.
