View Full Version : What would I charge???
Reptilian Feline 08-29-2002, 02:55 AM I've been asked to do some webdesign, and for the first time it's not for a friend, so I will get payed:)
One problem... What do I charge? I will do some graphic design and convert a layout to html (guess it's either drawn or in Word or something).
Should I ask for a set price or by the hour? How much?
peteny 08-29-2002, 03:02 AM Based on your http://www.reptilian-feline.net, I'd say charge $15 an hour...
edude 08-29-2002, 03:17 AM How rude..
I think he should charge $90.00 an hour..

Synthetic 08-29-2002, 03:18 AM Evaluate the total amount of work you'll put into the project. If it's a low amount I'd charge a set price, if it's rather high, I'd charge per hour.

*cough*
I'd make a fairly educated guess that owning a personal domain w/ the name feline in it would justify calling her a she...
If I'm wrong roshambo (http://scar.std64.com/discuss/images/smiles/nutkick.gif) me...
But, none the less I've had about 14 beers tonight, so nothing I type will make much sense anyway. I just think it should be "she" not "he". :D... That is all...
edude 08-29-2002, 03:42 AM AHH...................................

Acronym BOY 08-29-2002, 03:46 AM That depends, what is involved? Are you just copying and pasting text from a Word doc to Frontpage and putting in a jpeg or two or are you opening up notepad, making it xhtml 1 strict complaint complete with several different CSS's? Theres a big difference between the two. You current site isnt compliant either as html or xhtml.
Reptilian Feline 08-29-2002, 04:10 AM Well... I use 1stpage2000 when I do my website, and I think the only thing that makes my page non-compliant is in the lack of a doctype tag, because I started using Notepad, so that part hasn't been added. I always close my tags, use small letters (at least now, old material might have big letters) in the tags, never overlap, so it should be no problem moving it to xhtml. To make it xhtml-compliant I would have to add the tag for frames as well, I have been reading about it, so I will update it when I update my site, which will be as soon as I have any time left over in the day. ;)
I don't know how much CSS will be involved, because I haven't seen what he wants yet, just something about making a layout into html.
The artwork will be original stuff by me done in Photoshop, (he hasn't asked about flash) and will be unique. Putting in a jpeg or two is like asking a painter to throw together a couple of postcards. I might do some animated gifs if he wants it.
Oh... I am a woman...:)

mlovick 08-29-2002, 04:46 AM It is good to charge a certain amount per hour but also a set price per day if it is more than a few days work. That way you can give a closer estimate as to the total price on completion. Remember that clients rarely accept your first offerring and generally ask for changes before accepting it as a completed job so you have to take this into consideration!
Oh and remember - get a deposit, unless you want to chase your tail getting payment from them. I suggest 30 - 50% before you start and the remainder on completion.
Good luck ;)
Acronym BOY 08-29-2002, 04:46 AM Even if you tell it not to read the doctpye and give it html, it still doesnt validate:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.reptilian-feline.net%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=HTML+4.01+Strict&ss=
Or, jump down to frameset:
http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.reptilian-feline.net%2F&charset=%28detect+automatically%29&doctype=HTML+4.01+Frameset&ss=
And frames are sort of dead in favor of CSS:

ALA is a great website work learning more, here are some other links to look through:

And, of course, the wc3 recomendation itself:

.......as for your pay. Someone with a huge portfolio of really kickass stuff can ask for a lot more than someone who doesnt have much to show (we all need to start at the bottom, its where I am now). I usually try to go percentage of income of my clients. If they have a successful site, I reap the benefits. If they dont sell much, I dont get paid much. It also motivates you to keep it up to date and the like. Or if its a one time sort of thing, I would ask around $30 an hour or so. Than again, I am cheap. Aim higher, and if he says no, negotiate a bit.
Good luck!
Reptilian Feline 08-29-2002, 05:08 AM Thanks! I used to do some computer support for my students and my rate was wayyyyyy too low.
I'll ask for more details, how fast he wants it, how much graphics and what kind, and so on. He is open for negotiations, because he asked for a very rugh estimate. You have all given me some ideas and some useful input.
If all goes well, I'll set up an offer in the right forum, so I can turn this into a successful business. Offering free wallpapers and PowerPoint-templates, won't put bread on the table.:) Webdesign on the other hand...
combs 08-29-2002, 05:25 AM If the job is big you must have negotiated for less. If you are a good web designer you can fetch good money. No matter what you make....PP templates/wallpapers.....
