View Full Version : $26 dedicated server deal...

Hey Everyone,

I’m going to be getting a dedicated RaQ 4i server with http://www.rackshack.net, and was wondering if any of you would be interested in going in on the deal with me? Here are some more details...

THE SERVER CONFIGURATION:

Cobalt RaQ 4i
RaQ control panel
128 MBs RAM
20 GB HD
150 GBs monthly transfer
Unlimited email accounts
Unlimited forwarders and aliases
SMTP server
FTP server
Annonymous FTP server
Telnet access
CGI, Perl, PHP, and ASP (ChiliSoft)
DNS server
FrontPage 2000 support
InterBase 6 SQL server (whatever that is)
MySQL (we would have to install it)

So as you can see, the server comes with a lot of features. We wouldn't have to do much to configure it either, which is nice. But, I do have some experience with Linux, so I would be able to install custom modules if needed.

WHAT EACH OF US GETS:

5 GBs of space
37.5 GBs monthly transfer
All other features

Yeah, we each practically get the features of a dedicated server. Also, you can have as many sites on the server as you want, as long as you don't exceed your quotas. If you exceed your quota, then you can either opt to 1) shut down all your sites until the next month, 2) ask another if you can use some of their space or bandwidth, or 3) ask to get more space or bandwidth from RackShack, which you would pay for.

WHAT EACH OF US PAYS:

$26.38 per month
$67.65 one time setup fee

How would this work? Well, on a set date each month, each of you would send me $26.38 either using PayPal (preferred), MasterCard, or Visa. I will then pay RackShack. If one of you fails to pay you will automatically be booted from this deal and another individual will take your place. If you would like to leave this deal, then you must notify me (Justin) 30 days before you wish to quit so that I can search for someone to take your place.

MISC. STUFF:

I will be the server admin, so if you need something setup, added, etc. then just come to me and I'll do it. If the "something" includes installing or upgrading something, then a meeting between the individuals in this plan will be held and a vote will be taken. All of us must agree for the "something" to be done. But if you just need a site setup or something then it'll be done without any questions or votes.
I'm looking to set this up as soon as we get 4 people (including myself) to agree to this deal (hopefully within the week).

Please send me an email or reply to this thread if you’re interested. Thanks...

Hi

I just wanted to point out...the hard disk isnt going to be exactly 20gb...for a start some is lost through the filesystem, but (on the raq3) 1gb is assigned to the operating system...im not sure if this is the same as the raq4..i just wanted to make sure you knew..

Cheers, Matt

Tell me about that! I was almost ready to fire my gun :uzi: :D :D phew....

Anyway, Justin.... Will you let the other user have root/admin access to the shared server? If I am not wrong, with Cobalt Raq, you need admin access in order to add new domains/users. CMIIW.

cheers,

Yeah, I know. But didn't the thread title make you wanna click? :)

True. I'll just take the amount used for all that out of my personal allocated amount, so everyone else will still get 5GBs of space. Thanks for pointing that out.

No, I will be the only one with root access. Giving all four people admin access would be too much of a risk (they might screw something up). Like I said, if you need anything added you just come to me and I'll do it.

thread fooled me for a sec. isnt there a rule stating that topics cant be deceptive?

Justin S

Er, is there? If there is, I didn't mean to break that rule at all. I just thought that for you're pretty much getting a dedicated server without having to admin it out of this deal. Sorry :(

Technically in our forum rules (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/index.php?action=forum-rules) it isn't spelt out. Preferably it's to be avoided but in such a case it's not like we're going to throw the thread just because of the title. We can always edit it of course ;)

Thread stays, title stays.

Hey,
Im kinda interested in this deal, but have a few questions. First, what happens if you get a hosting company with like 20 sites that would be added a day, for a week? If you are setting all of the sites up, that would be a big job just for you. I mean, we pay people to just add the sites to the server, and if you were to do this free, you may get overloaded. If we take this deal, we could have about 50-75 sites that would go on in the coarse of 2-3 days. Could you handle something like this. We work with RAQs and know that there are a few steps that go along with setting up a site (about 9) and it would be a big undertaking if you wanted to add about 50 of these in one day.

Ok, thanks Chicken ;)

jimb: sorry to say this, but I don't think this deal is for you. I'm really just looking for people who want to host a few of their personal or business websites on the server - not run a hosting company.

oh ok, just thought I might ask.

I know this is an old post, but I think this is a really bad deal if no one else gets root access. All the other members are paying the same as you, but don't get equal privileges? That doesn't make alot of sense to me...

Sincerely,
Andrew

well... at $26/mo, what can you expect? :) :)
Or you can get your own server and get the root access, right? :D

cheers,

I don't really know why your post was necessary to this dead discussion, but I'll answer it anyway. Just as a note: we've had the server running a little more than two weeks, and it has worked perfectly so far.

Anyway, to answer your question: yes, everyone is paying the same amount, but only I get root access. Why? Because it's safer that way. We won't have to worry about one of the individuals looking into other peoples accounts, or bringing down the whole server. But other than root access, everyone gets the same features.

I don't really know. Weird, isn't it? :) It most likely had something to do with typing it in MS Word then pasting it into the post box.

There was another member who constantly said this, and I pretty much gave up after the first 60 times of pointing it out :)

We might as well explore moderatorialfusion surgery. Call us BCHICKEN.
