View Full Version : Do hyphens make a domain pretty much worthless?
NoFolio 08-29-2002, 12:43 AM I've been searching for a good .com for myself for the past week. I've noticed some pretty good looking domain names, which have a hyphen in them. It's not like "-domain-name-with-several-hyphens-" either. Just a 2 word name like "domain-name.com" So what I'm getting it is, are these automatically worth substantially less, just because they have a hyphen?
A hypothetical example given:
domainname.com -- An excellent domain name. Worth some money, and naturally, it's taken.
domain-name.com -- It's available. I would wonder WHY it's available. I figure if it's not taken, it's obviously not worth much.
As I said, it's hypothetical - no domain-name.com isn't really available. But say I happened across it one day on deleteddomains.com. Is this because it's worthless, or am I just a lucky guy?
I hope this post made sense...
Akash 08-29-2002, 12:58 AM i think it all depends on how many total characters there are...
IMO, if it is 2 words, with a hypen and longer than 9 chars (including the hypen), then I would pay, at most, 1/2 of the value of the domain name without the hypen.....i hope that makes sense
peteny 08-29-2002, 02:24 AM it depends, then again devalues ANY domain
for example:
web-host.com is a GREAT name
then again webhost.com is worth 5000 times more
nameslave 08-29-2002, 02:35 AM My personal experience with a hyphenated name is that it's worth waaay much less.
Perhaps web-based.com is itself not a very good name, but the fact that I haven't received even 1 single enquiry in 3 years (unless other domains of mine) still puzzles me. After all, it's a name that the hyphenated version makes more sense than webbased.com!
NoFolio 08-29-2002, 02:42 AM Thanks guys. The answers I expected, not hoped for. :\
apollo 08-29-2002, 03:58 AM btw, you can do ok with search engine placements with domains that do have hyphens....... but for real branding and easy-to-remember name -- it's somewhat bad
slowmail 08-29-2002, 03:46 PM I've always kept away from domains with hyphens as I feel it's just a mouthful when you need to tell someone your email address.
"... you my email address is 'john at my hyphen domain dot com'".

Yes. It's harder to remember the placement of a hyphen in a domain name.

Yes. It's harder to remember the placement of a hyphen in a domain name. And that's especially a problem if someone else has the hyphenless version, because any marketing you do of the hyphenated name is likely to send them some traffic. On the other hand, that can be a market for selling a generic hypenated name: often the same people who are using the one without the hyphen will find it worthwhile to have both.
friedmanlo 08-29-2002, 09:49 PM How about "CoolBonus.com"and "SkyCyber.com"............are they good domain names?.....how much does they worth?
Ahmad 08-30-2002, 01:50 AM It seems that people (especially domain traders) think that a domain with a hyphen is worthless. I have a very nice one myself. but nobody cares about it.
Darkfire001 08-30-2002, 05:58 AM I think it all depends I am sure there are some good Hypenated Domains out there (:) In reality its because one of the website I operate uses a hypenated address for its main site lol)
Bannaz 08-30-2002, 06:28 AM a hyphenated domain brings it down I think, but it can sometimes work well... as say:
selllots.com sounds better as sell-lots.com
JSpired 08-30-2002, 06:30 AM I don't know much about the value of domain names, but I do know, as someone already pointed out, that it's hard to remember where to place the hyphen in some names. That alone, I would imagine, would decrease the value of a name... Then again, what do I know. :D
Bannaz 08-30-2002, 07:03 AM I have a lot of domains with hyphens in...but the two words are very popular and commonly used.
Hyphenated domain names are definitely worth less. But if you think about it, it really comes down to the content and nature of your site. Your site will be remembered and repeatedly visited if you put all you can into it. Then, who cares if your domain has a hyphen in it or not? It wouldn't make a difference.
