Hey everyone,

I've been trying to do some research to find a good host, but I feel like most of the time people are really just advertising their services and not being honest. I've been scared away from providers that have lots of numbers in their names and other funky spellings. I just can't find a reliable source of info on hosts that lists the real tried and true providers.

Anyway, here's what I need a host for.

I'm launching a college news site driven by Wordpress, so I need php and mysql support. I would also like to be able to add some Ruby on Rails applications. The site will have text and photos, not too much more multimedia. And I expect their to be a pretty good volume of traffic every day.

The biggest problem is that this needs to be cheap, like under $10/month cheap.

Now please, are there any suggestions for some hosts that are American with good service that won't end up screwing a group of poor students? Thanks so much.

Hello,

What is your traffic expectation?

Let's say 2-300 people visiting every day. The site is updated every day.

Will this be for just 1 domain? Is this an already established website that is receiving 200-300 visitors daily, or is that just an estimate?

There are several providers that can accommodate your needs as they seem pretty basic. Depending on how much dynamic content and multimedia your website is serving(bandwidth and space requirements) will determine your host. If you will be using >50GB/mo bandwidth with a $10 budget you should be able to find a pretty good host for your needs.

This will be for just one domain. Again, there is the potential for a lot of storage because there will be several stories added every day.

Also, there may be even more visitors than that (2-300) a day, though it is only an estimate. My blog, which is much more niche, gets about 100 visitors a day, and I'm entirely confident that this site, serving a large college campus, will exceed that number.

But why do you search on windows hosting? are you going to use anything else besides of Wordpress in your site? something that requires ASP/MSSQL?

I agree.
The OP should search for linux reseller or linux shared hosting package.
Windows hosting is more expensive and doesn't have some features of linux hosting.

Wordpress should run fine on any modern host. Many will even install it for you if necessary - and the name of a host isn't the best way to see how trustworthy it is. Reviews however, and Googling the host and seeing if anything negative comes up is the way to do it. Still, you should always keep backups of your site anyway :)

As long as you have 100mb+ webspace, wordpress is fine.
Make sure you have php 5, php 4 is not so good :)

Most of the shared linux webhosts should be able to accomodate your needs, just be sure you pick a reputable host, or downtime and oversold servers may quickly become a thorn in your side.

Cheers.

Hi heythereyall,
I realize we are in the windows hosting section, but I’m also finding it difficult to advocate for windows hosting based on the information you’ve provided.

Sounds like an installation of Wordpress would be perfect for you, but you might also want to look at something like PHP-Nuke. PHP-Nuke is a web based automated news publishing and Content Management System (a 'nuke') based on PHP and MySQL. The system is fully controlled using a web-based user interface which might also work well.

You should be able to find a US Hosting plan from someone reliable and willing to look after a group of students. Your budget ($10-) should be more than enough.

All the best.
