I have a programming job undergoing at the mo.. well, I'm not sure what's happening now.

5 days ago there was a request for a fairly basic php job, not too hard anyway, and the client paid near enough instantly via western union for $200, which I'm not too familiar with and haven't yet even picked up the money.

After about 3days the e-mails started getting weird, like threats, saying if you don't have the job done "I have 20,000 URLs and 50,000 e-mail address to send to your bad name around" or something, which sort of put me off quite a bit, as we had started the proj, but was on-track to finish within about a week.

Anyway, I had just gone out after receiving this e-mail, (today in fact), and came back a few hrs later to find that he had sent plenty more, with e-mails stating he knows where I live etc and is having all these people come round to "bash" it in. I think he is from Romania.

Now, this is very strange, as I'm not sure what's turned him like this as I haven't really spoke much to him apart from about the proj before hand.

He's apparently giving me an hour before he sends around people to my home address.

Now I'm unsure what's happening, or what to do even, its just a bit strange.. ..never known anything like it, just that there are some STRANGE clients out there, if you can call them clients.

Lock the doors and shut the windows. You don't need threats like that... Tell them if they are professional they will apologise and you will finish the job OR you will send the money back (minus an admin fee) and forget about it.

Did you annoy someone really badly in the past that has come back to haunt you?

Never. Never had a client like this, he doesn't speak english well and its really hard to understand most of what hes saying but I could show a few e-mails here blanking out his addy. I've replied several times but no reply.

I don't let him get at you. Slag him off about not being able to speak English.
It's all talk and i wouldn't worry about it.
There just wee tramps.

I'm getting somewhere, as I havn't yet picked up the money from the nearest office around here, hes said he is going to pick it back up, but the threats are amazing still...yet I don't know what has sparked this off, I made it very clear that the job was going to take a week, yet he got all panicky after a couple of days.

Events like this really put you off.

That is what I'm thinking, but it concerns me more why such an effect has occured.

Don't think any client will go to that extent for mere $200. Try to calm him down and tell him that you are working on it and be patient. Don't panick and concentrate on his work. Clients have a way to shout like that to get work done fast.

chewnet give him my work address. tell him to send his mates there. even better tell him to try my gym in the free weights room between 10 am and 12 noon.
its most likely some kid with an attitude problem.

Its not really the "big man" attitude that worries me, as i have quite a few contacts if it came to that, plus you guys ;) - its just the threats of how he would hire people to go around posting bad things and sending e-mails acorss the globe. Maybe I am just being paranoid. But at the moment, the status is that he is picking up the money that he sent through western union as I hadn't actually picked it up.

That's weird! I wouldn't worry too much.

Trace his IP in his emails to see where he's emailing from....if its' Romania, I wouldn't worry :) If it's your neighbor's house, you might want to be a little concerned...

I would just advise him to pick up his money, no hard feelings, and he should find someone else, that you do not deal with people as he has done.

Yes since I told him about the payment still being there he sort of saw some light, but the threats were still in the e-mail.

Hopefully he'll pick up the money and won't hear anything again, its just quite a bit of work went into the proj too! :(

Never mind though, hopefully this has passed now, I'll keep updated anyway if I receive another e-mail.

You could finish the project, generalize it and sell it to the public. Instant money maker, and you'll make far more than the $200 you stood to make. :D

yes I might license it off. But it was a fairly custom request...so I'm not sure how many people would need it. It will go into my idea.txt file ;) gosh thats filling up now. :D

Good idea. I'll start the bidding at $100,000,000. The idea was to make 100x that amount so you're really getting a bargain! ;)

No.

Since I hadn't picked up the money from my local office, he could still go and collect it from his...

..so after suggesting he did so, no reply since.
That was the update, but still remains the "strangest client".;)

100% true story:

My strangest client was a lady escort that wanted to offer "services" instead of $$$ for her web site. But since she was charging $300 per hour and me "only" $75 /hour I felt cheated and chose the money instead.

The clients have the habbit of threatening. If they have 50,000 email addresses, tell them you have more than a million.
