Does anybody know if I can change the page or column width in Wordpress? I am using a predesigned template that I find is too narrow and sqished in.

Yes, you would do it in the style.css file or if it has more than one .css file the one where layout is contained. Be careful, changing widths may break the layout or if they used the faux columns trick, that's a graphic and you'd have to change the graphic.
