Hi
I'm new here and have a bunch of questions. I'm sure some of them will sound real stupid. First let me tell you our backgrounds so you'll have a clue what we are capable of :)
DH and I have both been in computers since before PC's. We both have been programmers and now we build, fix etc computers as well as set up networks etc. Years back we were going to set up an ISP and do know how to do all that. Besides the computer/ programming /electronics backgrounds I'm also a graphic artist from way back pre comptures and have been doing websites for years as well. So we have the bases covered there. Back when we were going to set up the ISP we also talked of setting up a web server and doing webhosting. However we moved instead and that never transpired. Now I've decided its high time I got into webhosting after piddling around helping my clients get set up on someone else's service. They often forget their passwords and have no clue about how to go about all this. I'm sure you all are familiar with this story huh? :)
Now comes my questions... BTW my partner is very familiar with linux and we're not too keen on windoze for commercial use.
While this may grow into much more for starters I'm thinking of just getting some space that I can divide up and resell. The reason for this is that while we are more than capable of designing and building an appropriate server the costs of putting in the necessary feeds here are expensive. As we have other irons in our fire too I'd rather start small and work up to that point. For now I'm thinking that 200 mbs or so with high bandwidth, lots of subdomains, cgi bin and all the goodies like elist, and being able to run a bulleten board/forum, name server etc will be enough. Here is the thing though... I will need to be able to have several domains using that 200 mbs and many subdomains. I have 3 biz personally i need space for which will accomidate a bit of that space. Then I also will host a couple other small businesses which probably won't take a lot of space. But I want to be able to divide that space as I see fit and not by any specific increment ie 50 mbs. There is a bunch of very small, very low hit sites I want to host cheap for a group of disabled people who must work from home. Subdomans for them will probably be enoujgh. Also I would rather handle everytihng myself than have a managed space.
Does anyone know of a good webhost perferably running linux/unix servers ? with good uptime ? that meets the requirements I have ?
Now here comes the very dumb question ;-p I have not kept up on all the terminology that has developed since we were going to get into this...ie back in the days of the 14,4 connections LOL. Most places where i have seen the term 'reseller' they want to offer you a percentage to sell their set plans. That is not my desire. I want to divide up and sell my own space yet at this time I dont' want to have a dedicated server either...don't need that much. Soooo... dumb question (drum roll) is... what exactly do they mean by 'reseller' AND can I do what I'm wanting to do on any webhost that offers enough domains, subdomains, etc ? Or do they expect that 200 mbs to be for just one domain/ company ? Ya... I warned you it was a stupid question ;-p
thanks
