View Full Version : DNS Problem?

OK, this has happened so much I have lost count! Does anyone have any explanation for this:

I have four computers set up on a LAN. I just switched one of my websites to another host. I changed the DNS last night and it usually takes 24-48 hours for the DNS to propagate.
This afternoon I saw the site on the new host and I figured that everything had transferred quicker than I thought it would. However, when I go over to another computer on my LAN, it is still linking to the old host and the old version of the site shows up.
I know that in a day or two it will work itself out but I don't understand why it does this.

Sometimes, if u restart your machine you should be able to get to the host. I have seen the problem if I use 2 different ISP's from one location. One would take forever to propagte. Also, try pinging from different computers/locations. I've done this to figure out that is my ISP is taking forever.

I get different servers when I ping the same domain from two different computers on my LAN. I am using Roadrunner with my router which is connected to 4 Windows machines.
Three ping the new host and my computer is pinging the host that I just moved from....Go figure. I know that by tomorrow it will probably clear up. I have talked to tech support about this and they can't explain it either.

Maybe your operating system/browser is caching DNS query results.

That's what I was thinking but I cleared my cache, shut down my computer and router. Started everything back up and voila... I still have the problem. :bawling:

Hmm .. are you sure both machines are using the same DNS server?

It could also be that clearing the browsers cache doesn't clear the DNS cache.

Hmm... That is interesting.

I am looking at the TCP/IP Properties of my computer. There is a preferred DNS Server and an Alternate DNS servier listed. Both numbers are almost identical except the last number is off by 1.
The same TCP/IP properties are on all computers.
I'll just wait it out and give it a day to clear up, although I'll probably never have an explanation.

BTW, I also did a "ipconfig/flushdns" command, shut down both computer and router, restarted and it didn't do anything.

Maybe you have a hosts file with the old ip address in it? If you're running Windows XP you can check C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts. I don't remember where it is on other versions of windows.

As I figured it would, it resolved itself today. It's just one of those things that drives me crazy.
