View Full Version : Soda Ban?
mind21_98 08-27-2002, 05:34 PM Hmm. Looks like LA wants to ban soda from its schools: http://www.abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/soda_ban020827.html?partner=earthlink
 it shouldn't be the school's responsibility to care for our kids. Their parents should be the ones telling them "no soda". What does everyone think?
Darth 08-27-2002, 05:36 PM lol took me a min to figure out what "Soda" is :D
mind21_98 08-27-2002, 05:38 PM I should probably change that to "pop" then. :D
Synthetic 08-27-2002, 05:39 PM Yeah, I saw it on the news yesterday.
I think the whole thing is stupid, really. When the kids grow up and graduate from school, it'll be up to them to take care of their health.
They should be allowed the right to drink soda in school. Whether they wish to or not, that should be their decision.
Anyways, if the students can't drink soda, then I just hope the teachers can't as well!
ubergeek22 08-27-2002, 05:40 PM In a school in the UK they banned fizzy drinks (took away the vending machines and handed out free bottles of water during class), and teachers reported a *massive* increase in behaviour and drop in the number of pupils being sent out.
Synthetic 08-27-2002, 05:42 PM Oh yes, and it seems like the only reason they're doing this, is to "slim down fat kids."
They say soda/pop isn't nutritional... but has anyone seen the food they serve in these cafeterias? Not only are they substantially unhealthy, they taste like crap.
And they are just banning the sale of soda, right? Or are the students not even allowed to bring their own soda to school?

Looks like they're just taking out the machines from what the article's saying. :)
Synthetic 08-27-2002, 05:55 PM Ok, that makes more sense. At first I had the idea that students weren't allowed to drink soda at all, on school facilities.
"researchers have found that one can of soda a day increases the risk of obesity by 60 percent"
Wow... ?
SoftWareRevue 08-27-2002, 05:57 PM I'm okay with it.
I'd be a lot more upset if they were to ban beer from WHT.
mind21_98 08-27-2002, 06:03 PM At my old elementary school, I don't remember them selling anything even close to soft drinks. It was milk or juice (at least in the cafeteria). They didn't take any outside drinks away from you though. No one had a problem with this policy.
I wonder if it's still that way at the elementary school level or if it's changed. There still seems like there's a civil rights issue involved in banning soft drinks though. I'd prefer to make dietary decisions myself rather than trust it to a government agency.

They just did. Drinking and typing is against the law! You're under arrest. :stickout
Dogma 08-27-2002, 06:06 PM We have soda machines, but they recently added a milk machine. Yes, I go to school in Wisconsin :)
It's not their duty to serve soda in school. Good for them for not having soda machines! I wish the same were true here.
Andrew 08-27-2002, 06:06 PM When I was in school, all they would give us was either milk or juice (2 things which make you a hell of a lot fatter than a diet coke!).
In high school, all the students wanted a soda machine and they just wouldn't give in. Why did most of us want a soda machine? So we didn't have to drink fattening or sugar filled crap all the time as an alternative to water.
Banning soda...heh...no wonder they come to school with friggin arsenals these days...
Phrozen 08-27-2002, 06:10 PM I really find this quite silly. It has always been like this here though...
Being in high school, I think I'm old enough to decide what I want to drink on my own. If you don't want soda, then don't buy it. It's really a pretty simple concept.
So instead of filling our corridors with soda machines, they fill them with powerade, gatorade, iced tea, lemonade, and water machines...

Take the beer. Take it all. Just leave my keyboard alone. :bawling:

I agree. When I went to school they served those disgusting school lunches. Ugh.
When I went to Elementary school they didn't have sodas. In middle school they had those so-called soda machines. Basically they were Sunkiss and all those artifical "juices".
Our high school has a soda machine. It's always out.
I think the whole thing is quite silly too.
IGobyTerry 08-27-2002, 06:22 PM Wow, so my school isn't as strict as I thought. We still have Coke, Vanilla Coke, Cherry Coke, some rootball and some Fruitopia Drinks. Then again, my school (Reeferside High (http://www.painesville-township.k12.oh.us/riverside/)) also is sponsored by Coca Cola for the next like 5 years or something.
shaunewing 08-27-2002, 06:35 PM Hmm. I don't know what I would have done with soft drink at school :)
My high school had several vending machines as well as the canteen selling most types of drinks - but it wasn't always like that; when I started there they wouldn't sell soft drink. They also won't let you drink it during PE.
My primary school had a vending machine - but it only sold those drinks that are fruit juice and soda water.
University - has every drink imagineable.. several cafeterias (with decent food) and vending machines in most buildings :)

Tony P 08-27-2002, 06:56 PM Next they'll be saying that drinking coffee is bad, and should be banned from the work place...

I thought coffee *was* bad for you?
interactive 08-28-2002, 12:31 AM hail soda! lol hail mtn dew! up with the soda and down with the cafeteria crap...lol
AceWeb 08-28-2002, 12:50 AM Yeah, we do not want that Clorox (Clorox=Soda) in the school. Ban 'em, ban 'em all. :stickout
mind21_98 08-28-2002, 01:08 AM Must we have our health delivered to us on a silver platter? I think we have to take responsibility for our own health! :D
Dogma 08-28-2002, 06:32 AM Obviously it is your responsibility to determine what you drink. That does not, however, mean that your school has to offer soda. It ain't a right that that one right of due process and all that stuff....
Alex[nl] 08-28-2002, 06:36 AM AAARGH!
Was I the only one scared to death by the heartburn DHTML add?
Phrozen 08-28-2002, 06:40 AM I seriously cannot understand why my school won't sell us soda...
They already sell us coffe, cappuccino, donuts, pastries, etc., etc. We have vending machines where we can buy candy, pop tarts, and chips.
Is any of this so much better for us than soda? I think not.
Reptilian Feline 08-28-2002, 09:44 AM I think the best way of selling those fattening foods and drink would be to put the vending mashines at the top of a tower only accesable from a fligth of stairs. Also make sure the things in the mashines are really low price so students will take the time to climb the stars to get to it, NOT run across the street.
Would make them loose weight, no???
ubergeek22 08-28-2002, 09:44 AM Sunny Delight scares me. Some kid had their skin turned yellow by the dyes after drinking too much  It's probably worse than most fizzy drinks...

So you mean they shouldn't be placed next to the elevators? :P
Haley 08-28-2002, 10:18 AM Banning soda.....heh!
ned patter 08-28-2002, 10:50 AM Well America is as bad as it is but if all kids got unfat then America might get a slightly better name.

another prime example of a "patterism"
ned patter 08-28-2002, 11:35 AM No i'm just trying to give suggestions on how to make America live it to it's name people say it has.
combs 08-28-2002, 01:30 PM Ban Soda??? What for? It is good if taken properly without any accomplices.

Relative to most other countries, Americans live like kings. They may be healthier in general, but there's also a greater level of obesity because there's more time for video games and stuff. If all the kids went to boarding school from kindergarden all the way through high school they might not have time for video games and thus the obesity problem will be nonexistant.
ned patter 08-28-2002, 05:35 PM Schools sell junk food/drink because that's what you's want.
When i was at primary school they took the salt away so i brought in salt for everyone:) .

I remember when i was in America i saw the kids going to school on saturday in the big yellow long bus but they do get out of school slightly earlier than the Scottish school children from what i can remember.
I know i know they live like kings in burger kings:) .

hehe. That was probably a private school. Public schools don't usually have Saturday sessions here (well, unless you have a discipline problem and they use that as punishment). :D
ned patter 08-28-2002, 05:41 PM It was in Florida. I did see a big yellow bus with kids in it on a saturday.
OverSkilled 08-28-2002, 06:04 PM I think its a good idea to ban soda. I haven't had carbination for around 2 months now and I have about 300% more energy then I did. I drank around 2-3 pops per day. I didn't get fat im skinny as a pole but it just wore me down a lot. I think if you take these machines out student spirit will go up. I was just always tired and not willing to do work when I drank carbination. I am glad I quit.

My school had all that stuff in the morning - coffee, muffins, croissants, etc.
Then, there was a chocolate vending machine, chip vending machine and soft drink vending machine.
Then there is the case of university... McDonalds keep asking for permission to build a store on the premises... I wonder if they'll ever get approved.

It's good they're not letting McDonalds build. McDonalds just tastes nasty. Subway Forever! :D

I agree - I can't stand McDonalds.
I've only ever had Subway twice, but I enjoyed it. If they wanted to build a Subway on the premises I wouldn't object :stickout.
