I am just curious on how many companies use the same line in their about us profile that I believe originated from HostMySite back in the day. You all know it and it goes something like this ...

"BlahBlahHost was started by Fred and Jed after being frustrated with their current provider ... "

I just find it humorous that this line is used so much - though everyone tends to put their own spin on it.

Any hoot - it just makes me laugh.

Not me. Doesn't make sense at all.

I just find it humorous that this line is used so muchAssuming it's mostly true that people start their own hosting venture as a result of being frustrated with the hosts they've been using, it's no longer a funny thing.

It's not likely though that the major reason for getting into this business is frustration. Just because your car annoys you for some reason, you don't start your own plant. It's the fact that it's very easy and cheap to become a host and have a try at it, that makes so many ex-hosting customers become hosts themselves.

The beauty of that whole "about us" intro is that it presents the host an ex-customer, someone who was on "your side", knows what you're going through etc. Further, it knocks down most other hosts, for the idea is that "it's so hard to find a good host, that it may be easier to start your own service, but you're lucky, for you found us!" :)

I recall the same story happening to myself way back, having been with two fly-by hosts in a roll caused me to look into another direction, starting my own ;)

Saw the market back in 2000, jumped into the market and have been operating under several different hosting companies since. All successful and profitable.

People who start companies due to "frustration" from other companies don't always work out the best, inexperienced people that lead other people down the same road that they once had. its a never ending cycle it seems.

It may sounds amusing however still in the day when hosts are opened in their dozens daily by inexperienced "I will reply to your question when I get home from school" type operators I am not surprised that people will startup out of their own frustration.

I started my own hosting becuase I could not get what I wanted all those years ago, so the easiest option was my own box, a Cobalt RaQ.

I started because I was so IMPRESSED with my host, but still saw many ways to improve, drew out a business plan and still going strong! Odd eh!

I started mine because my clients wanted me  really.

Two guys, who trusted me from my SMF support team membership days, sent me money so I could rent my first VPS and sell them shared hosting.

hahaha I've read a lot of that. I just somehow love to read the about us webpages of webhosts (specially the "UNLIMITED HOSTING" ones, that appear like in the page 115 of google when you search web hosting). lol

It originated with who? -- never heard of 'em.

That was indeed exactly how I got into the business ... laugh if you want, but all it does is make you look like an a**. I mean, who are you to judge?

Yup. That's why I got into the biz. Way back in the days of horse and buggy in internet terms, I was screwed over by one host and made to feel like a complete idiot by another because I didn't have a college degree in Uber Geek. After talking with several of my webdesigner buddies, we all pretty much felt the same way. Hosting companies didn't seem very personable back then. Soooo...I paid about $2000 for a 200 ghz server with 256 MB RAM and a 20 GB HD and started my own. :D

I started because I was in need of a personal dedicated as well and I already was hosting around 8 friends and figured I might as well make it official and get the ball rolling. :)

Ok, Don't hate me for this Tina, but $2000 for a 200 GHZ server! That is an AMAZING deal! ;)

I believe this was about 10 years ago, considering your company history.

How does it feel to see that today a VPS with a 200 Mhz processor share, 20GB disk and 256 MB ram is considered a low end VPS? :) I will feel the same in about 8 year. Moore's law (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law) should be teached at schools.

You know, I never considered HostMySite as starting that trend. If we did that's pretty nice I guess. :-)

I know Lou and Neil personally after having worked here for 8 years, and I can say that the tagline is honest - they tried several different webhosts for a different business they were trying to get off the ground (don't ask - I don't remember what the business was) and found that everyone they tried didn't meet their expectations. So, they started their own.
