Me too :) Except I do use it at home about half of the time. sadistikal 08-27-2002, 06:53 PM Been using linux for 6 years or so now. Slackware for servers and redhat for workstations generally...depends on my mood. At home anyway. Binx 08-27-2002, 07:25 PM I use both Linux and Windows:smash: - which do I prefer - Linux ;) clocker1996 08-27-2002, 08:11 PM just servers Studio64 08-27-2002, 08:51 PM Duel boot. Windows 2000 Server & Linux Mandrake Reptilian Feline 08-28-2002, 02:22 AM I have started playing around with Mandrake at home. My old 225 MMX (yes it's been tampered with) doesn't have enough RAM (the old EDO-kind) so I had to give up on it as a workstation. I run it as a server now, playing around with apache, samba and such. It's great :). I just upgraded to 8.2. Oh... and I'm a woman... SharkBait 05-06-2005, 05:56 PM At work I run both Linux (Mandrake) and WinXp Pro. At home (if i ever use my computer there) its WinXP Pro t3r0 05-06-2005, 06:10 PM Only linux here. :penguin: I've been 100% m$ free for more than one year :) sasha 05-06-2005, 06:26 PM MS free for 4 or 5 year. Running SMGL here. JSpired 05-06-2005, 06:28 PM I use SuSE, Slackware and Ubuntu at home these days and have used Linux at home for years...and yeah, a woman too. :) ChaosHosting 05-06-2005, 06:49 PM Using Ubuntu for about 3 months now, went Windows free affter I accidentally courrupted my Windows partition, never reinstalled. Dan L 05-06-2005, 07:11 PM SuSE and Windows 2000. If I didn't do so much webdesign [IE browser checking] I would move over to SuSE completely. Disgruntled 05-06-2005, 07:17 PM I have both Windows and Linux. On desktop computer is Windows XP Home SP2 and SuSE 8.2. On laptop is Windows XP Home SP2 and MEPIS 2004.1. Windows is more generally useful to me, but I use linux a lot surfing the web because it's less vulnerable. For making backup copies of CD's I use linux K3b. Copy protection has destroyed this function in Windows Roxio. 3spades 05-06-2005, 07:51 PM dual boot, windows for games, ubuntu linux for everything but games case 05-06-2005, 10:18 PM Im running fedora core 3 on my workstation at work, centos 4 and solaris on the servers. Suse 9.3 on my laptop and dual booting winxp pro & ubuntu which will be replaced with freebsd tonight on my desktop. hostbox 05-06-2005, 10:37 PM Uh... 3 PC's My pc has DB w/XP and Ubuntu linux (debian) The other has Windows Server and FreeBSD And the other has Windows xp (had CentOS before). SniperDevil 05-06-2005, 10:37 PM Leave it to a new member to resume an almost-3-year-old thread. :D Anyhow, yes, I run Debian Sarge on this machine, with a dual-boot setup in case I need to get back into Winblows XP for whatever reason. Oakii 05-07-2005, 12:18 AM Home linux server Regardless of how much "better" linux is, I just can't seem to get used to it. The Napster 05-07-2005, 12:33 AM I installed linux on one of my old boxes i dont admire it much but i guess its got a far way to come to even compeate with MS. Reminds me i just love this linux desktop background. Criminal#58369 05-07-2005, 04:29 AM I use linux and windows, windows pissed me off so i use, linux for my servers :D i dont really like windows on my home os, but i use it because i use photoshop/macromedia products on it.. Techark 05-07-2005, 04:55 AM Linux all the way here. I have Win4Lin which is Win98 running as a vitural machine under linux for my Macromedia products. I have a copy of WinXP on my laptop that I use when I travel only because I use a GPRS sim card to connect to the net when I am out and the software for it only works with windows. If I could figure a way to port it to linux I would switch the laptop too and never touch Windows on my desktop again. The Napster 05-07-2005, 05:03 AM Well on a server platoform linux is definetly my preffered O/S Windows Server 2003 is not my cup of tea, it annoys me. mouldy_punk 05-07-2005, 05:13 AM I have a dual boot of Win XP and SuSE 9.2 linux. The only thing stopping me getting rid of Win XP completely is the gaming. Disgruntled 05-07-2005, 07:16 PM Actually the little bit of gaming I do is occasionally doing Tuxracer in MEPIS (using the 2.6.7 kernal). MEPIS has the right video driver to work properly in my laptop. I have found that SuSE won't give me 3D video in either my laptop or desktop. I have made it through Twisty Slope a few times, but I haven't advanced past Bumpy Ride. AHS_Wrestler 05-08-2005, 01:54 AM This topic was brought back from the dead. That used to be my old username on my old computer, old town. Forgot the password so I had to register another account :-P slice16 05-08-2005, 07:02 AM I have a wide variety :D at home, my main system is a dual boot with Win Xp pro and CentOS. I have a dedicated firewall/router (running Softwall, linux) A Vps server, with two install of server 03 and an two of centos :) I love linux for home use tho :) linux-tech 05-08-2005, 01:55 PM I've used both over the years, and I've got to say that Linux just is not ready for home use quite yet. There are a number of reasons for this. Firstly, native windows applications can't be wrong properly under emulators (wine, etc). Unfortunately, some can, some can't. If they're designed for XP specifically, most likely they can't. this is a problem with Wine, and other emulators, realistically. Since I have paid for numerous applications (trillian, barca, etc), being able to use those is pretty crucial. Secondly, development isn't taking place for Linux at the rate that it is for Windows at the moment. Developers are focusing on Windows, rather than Linux, for whatever reason. Thirdly, Linux doesn't have the best hardware support available, and you need to seriously tweak it to get the hardware support for sound/3d/etc that you want. Not something that your average user can do. That said: I started out using strictly Linux, for a good few years, it's all I used. However, over years, I wanted to actually do stuff with my pc, rather than sit around and not. Unfortunately, in order to do this, I had to install Windows XP. gaming? 99% of it's for Windows, and, even cedega doesn't cut it (hell, they can't even support D2, though they claim to do so). Applications? Again, Linux doesn't cut it. Admittedly, MANY can be run through Wine, but they can NOT be utilized fully, and many, many more can not. I'd love to see the day that I can switch completely over from Win to Linux, but I don't think that'll be happening. Too many developers are focusing on the Windows side of things, and not enough on the other. From a server and business side of things? I'll agree, wholeheartedly, Linux is THE best thing known to man (regardless of how Microsoft says they have a lower TCO), however, from a home user perspective, it's hands down Windows. |
