View Full Version : What's the best billing system out there now?
Josh Stein 06-15-2008, 11:20 PM Started out with a custom coded system many moons ago. Then switched to WHMAPv2. When WHMAPv3 did not deliver, we bailed ship to Modnerbill v4. We just spent Thursday evening through Sunday evening working on a migration to MBv5. Lets just say we were not pleased. Simple tasks like editing an invoice are not programmed in! It seems MBv5 has bugs a many even though it has the potential to be very powerful.
So I ask, what is the latest and greatest system these days? I looked around at WHMCS, AWBS, and Clientexec but they seem so inexpensive that irks me regarding their quality, sustainability, support, etc. We need something powerful, with very few bugs, and that has the intention of years of good support and enhancement.
Much thanks!
n e x u s 06-15-2008, 11:43 PM Hi,
We have used WHMAP, Modernbill & WHMCS in the past. WHMCS is beaten the two others.
Best regards,
vetwebhosting 06-16-2008, 12:27 AM I use Modern v4 for one site and ClientExec for another. ClientExec is very nice, affordable and has a built in support/knowledebase/download module included.
PAH - Tim 06-16-2008, 12:40 AM WHMCS would be my number one choice. It is a very feature rich program with updates coming out very often. Its latest release v3.6.1 is a great program. The support behind WHMCS is also fantastic. The program is definitely worth giving a shot.
diligent 06-16-2008, 12:41 AM WHMCS would be my choice! I've yet to experience a bug, and the support is good, along with being fairly customizable. Theres plenty of addon modules to help out as well.
Josh Stein 06-16-2008, 06:10 AM Are WHMCS, AWBS, Clientexec, etc 100% encoded? I am pretty sure that I have read WHMCS is. That's a bummer because they would probably make customizations and our own bug fixing difficult.
TMcKeon 06-16-2008, 06:21 AM It would have to be WHMCS from myself as well. It is an excellent peice of software and is well worth the money! Fantastic support, great updates and overall just a excellent peice of software to use!
You should try a few of the demos provided on their websites yourself if your still unsure!

I'd rather stick to the files provided by the distributor, as your custom modifications to the code make it harder to upgrade.
WHMCS is worth a try, easy to integrate with your site and extend with plugins/modules, and it is a very stable piece of software.
WCTisha 06-16-2008, 06:28 AM check also ubersmith.... we are very satisfied on this piece..

Other than the lite edition, ubersmith is a very expensive product, compared to other billing solutions out there.
PogiWeb 06-16-2008, 11:07 AM I believe the OP mentioned that the current scripts are very inexpensive and Ubersmith wouldn't be a problem. You can always create your own modules pages in WHMCS.
ethical 06-16-2008, 07:30 PM WHMCS would get my vote. I started with WHMAP v3 but really has so manny bugs and problems its not worth a look. I find i am actually getting more orders with whmcs as the order system is much more intuitive.
Mansoor 06-16-2008, 08:03 PM WHMCS is the best, easy to integrate and modify. We have used MB and WHMAP but WHMCS is the winner.
TheLimey 06-17-2008, 04:24 AM From what I've read on these forums and elsewhere. I may have some of the facts wrong, but I'm sure you guys will correct them :)
WHMAP
Developed under contact by SolidPHP.com
Can have multiple order profiles on different domains.
Forums closed now - maybe too many client complaints?
Ubersmith
Expensive product. Slow development. No PHP5 support. No support for selling domains?
MB5
Slow support reported, especially with more complex issues. Bugs - no current tracker. Recent beta update release (5.3.2).
No support for downloadable products.
ClientExec
Recent new release. Popular. Can sell downloadable products but no licensing for them.
WHMCS
Very popular. Active forums. 100% encoded but doesn't seem to bother people. Can sell downloadable products and also license them with a beta module.

Haven't heard of that beta module. Anyone?

I contacted them directly and Matt sent me a copy to trial. Works very well but needs a few little improvements, particularly for annual renewals for support/upgrades. Similar to PHPAudit, but integrated into WHMCS :) - If you look on their demo, setup a new product and select "Licensing" as the server type you'll see it working.
Matt didn't feel there'll be a lot of demand so development has been a bit slow on getting it out of beta.
For me, it's the "Holy Grail" as it integrates host billing and software licensing into a single solution.

Yes me too! I just tested the demo, and it seems to be a great solution for software providers. Is the beta stable enough to use? Is it the same module used in the whmcs.com client area?
TheLimey 06-17-2008, 10:43 AM Is the beta stable enough to use? Is it the same module used in the whmcs.com client area?
Yes, it's basically the same module. whmcs.com have some custom templates, but otherwise it's the same.
It seems to be pretty stable. It relies on curl calls to the license server rather than local keys. The only issues I ran into during initial tests were handling renewals for support/upgrades. This is handled by setting an addon for the product which is autogenerated on first purchase. This addon should have to be active to get access to downloads (but that part doesn't work just yet). The other problem I did find was the cron didn't suspend the addon if it wasn't renewed - there is no option to suspend addons only terminate them at the moment.
I'm sure that with some gentle persuasion from others, this module will be out of beta soon :)
Spudstr 06-17-2008, 10:45 AM We run Ubersmith DE.. works great and is worth it, unless your building your own system from the ground up.
pphillips 06-17-2008, 12:33 PM Check out WHT's own Wiki http://www.webhostingtalk.com/wiki/Billing_and_automation_software
The best billing software for others may not necessarily be the best for you. I'd recommend taking a look at all of them and choosing the one that will work best for your company. There's really no single solution that is best for everyone.

Let's get to work. :P
