Are you the owner? Do you have any partners? Or did you have any partners?
Any horror stories about having a partner?
What is the typical age of the owner of your web hosting company? 30 something Are you the owner? I own 50% of the shares Do you have any partners? He owns the other 50% of the shares Any horror stories about having a partner? (small children should cover their eyes..the answer to this one is pretty horrorable) ---- He's my husband *GASP*
/me checks the time... Yep it's after 3am -- I really shouldn't post here after 3am :stickout
davet 08-27-2002, 03:31 AM Deb, does he do 50% of the work? might want to raise your share if he doesn't :)
3am? you mean i don't have to stay up 24/7 to operate a hosting biz? I'll have to work on that.
I had a problem with a parnter (close friend) which i ended up buying out. It was too damaging to our friendship... Especially when only one of use was doing the work.
The reason I posted this, was because I have pretty much ruled out the option of having a another partner in the future... but have also realized this could rule out opporunities too.
Wanted to see everyone elses' views.
Deb, does he do 50% of the work? might want to raise your share if he doesn't He most definitely does. We both bring opposite skills to the table which works out great, especially since both skill sets are required to succeed. 3am? you mean i don't have to stay up 24/7 to operate a hosting biz? I'll have to work on that. LOL! I didn't say that... I just said I should not post HERE after 3am ;) I had a problem with a partner (close friend) which i ended up buying out. It was too damaging to our friendship... Especially when only one of use was doing the work. :( Sorry to hear that. The reason I posted this, was because I have pretty much ruled out the option of having a another partner in the future... but have also realized this could rule out opportunities too. I certainly wouldn't rule it out completely. Outside of one partner or the other just not doing their share (which equals both giving at least 150% to the task at hand), I think a large contributor to these 'divorces' is the fact that both partners tend to have the same skills. This can lead to both partners feeling like the other is stepping on their toes or competing for a task that each feels is best for them. It also causes one or the other to feel "bossed around" by their partner. By finding a partner who has skills totally opposite of your own, yet equally important to the survival of the business, there's a much greater opportunity for both partners to give everything they have to the business, in a leadership roll, without stepping on the other's toes...
You're now the proud winner of an extra 2 cents! :D

Don't own one at the moment - used to. Might do it again...
No at first. Bought out later and made an exec of the buying company "to aid transition" until I left.
Horror story -- the Chairman of the Board of the buying corp was NUTS, psycho, few fries short of a happy meal, lights on - nobody's home, getting a nice white coat (with no holes in the sleeves) for Christmas. Get the idea??? Couldn't deal with his "episodes". Actually wanted me to sign a paper regarding something he did as "an act of God"!!!

As for the people who are 50 / 50, what were you thinking?
Everyone knows you can't have a business being 50/50 - someone needs to have more power, ie 51/49 or whatever.
I remember kids getting their asses chewed out in college business courses when they suggested 50/50.
As for for the married people who each own 50 %, what happens if you get separated?
what happens if you get separated? Marital divorce can have the same devastating affects as a platonic partnership breakup. This is where the 'prenups' come in handy. As much as I despise paying the attorney there are plenty of areas that I feel better knowing that we did.

Well as someone that has been down that road, it does not matter if your spouse is listed as co-owner at 50% or not, they are getting it or lots of cash anyway. If you happen to be the main earner in the family get ready for the bend over. Paper and pre-nups mean very little in the end, depending on what state you are in they may get more than 50% if the judge decides your future earning power it greater than your spouses.

2Grumpy 08-29-2002, 03:02 AM I kicked my butt the other night and now I have a restraining order against me.
If I could find a way to get decent insurance, I might hire my wife but she'll be an employee and not a partner! Just don't tell her I said that.
davet 08-29-2002, 03:52 AM automation is the key to success :D
kevinwholder 08-29-2002, 08:52 AM 32 years young but getting closer to 50 daily
I own it and a friend helps out...
I have one person who assists with general clerical duties and invoicing of clients... Oh yeah.. almost forgot Brutus, he is my "collection manager" hee hee hee
No horror stories YET.. He is a computer junkie as am I.. BUT he is also a professional interior designer so the office looks GREAT.. (always a plus to have multiple skills).. I am messy and when I leave the office I come back and the magic cleaning wizard has came and everything is all tidy... Wonderful problem to have!!
:-)
WII-Aaron 08-29-2002, 09:35 AM Hmmm...
I'm 28, my partner is 31. We're a 50/50 split.
Control? 50/50 is just stock ownership. Our board of directors consists of 3 people. Myself, my partner, and an outside business consultant. The board has the final say on any disputes.
I have !!!PLENTY!!! of partnership horror stories. Way to many to go into here. (Imagine owning a retail store and your partner decides he wants out so he comes in with 6 of his friends when he knows you're there alone and they load up his truck and smash everything else including the phone so you can't call the cops. Then the cops arive and tell you it's a civil matter. There was a court battle that lasted YEARS.)
My current partnership is the best I've ever had. He knows very little about the technical end, but he works for a MAJOR telecommunications company and has been the top salesman in thier system for the last 3 years. He can sell a bikinni to an Eskimo. I'm not much of a front man. I handle all the back end tech work (with 2 techs we have on staff) and work with our vendors, etc.
It's worked very well for us.
Aaron
