Tried doing a search for dedicated servers but all I get is offers. I just wanted to know at what point did most of you resellers move to a dedicated solution? number of clients wise? Such as did you load your reseller account with 10, 20 ,30 , 100, etc... clients before moving to a ded or did you have 3 reseller accounts with numerous clients?

Just trying to plot our long term life objectives, and need some figures to help plot our growth.

I would say it's a balance of server load and profit. You should think about getting your own server as soon a you have enough customers to pay for it. You should always keep an eye on your server load and free space.

If you don't use too much resources, you shouldn't move. It is cheaper and you don't need to administrate your own server.

So resource as opposed to bandwidth should be the deciding factor? If all of my clients are only pushing 4Gigs a month but pushing the CPU to 10-30% utilization (just a sample :) ) then get a ded?

Jump ship to your own machine when you are making at least twice what a dedicated server will cost you. So you'll need to be at least making US$750.00/mth.

Then when you get more revenue, get a smaller dedicated server [PIII etc] and place just your site + your helpdesk etc on that server. Then just keep adding servers as each server hits its revenue goal. :)

Some good advise here. If you are serious about being a web host you should get a dedicated server as soon as you have enough clients to pay for it comfortably.

I agree... when you go to move to a dedicated server you should be able to loose 3-5 clients in a month, but still be able to pay the bills.

OK so now it is just a matter of having the clients. Hmm doing future projections is much harder than I thought. I assume if we move to a ded move to a good ded and not one of the budget deds you see advertised here all the time?

At the rate we are going it maybe 6-8 months before we hit those figures. But it is always good to plan ahead :)

When you are in the market for a server... for a hosting company you don't always want to get the 99.00 deals. However, some places can offer you great rates, specs, service, etc for the money.

I would do tons of researching and reading before making a final choice.
