what is the difference between raq4i and raq4r?

As far as I can tell, the biggest difference in the 4r is the two 20GB (or 30GB, or ???) drives for RAID-1 (disk mirroring), while the 4i has a single drive.

Keep in mind that it is hardware failure protection, not a backup solution.

A Dialtone Internet support person said to me that if the power supply in a machine goes bad, it can fry both hard drives.

Sure, ditto if a giant robot monkey comes through the data center and smashes it :D. Or if, as in the case of one of our mailservers a couple of months ago, the go$d#^&$@ RAID card goes bad.

As Chicken said, the dual drives are meant for hard drive failure protection, but they do not preclude having good backups!
