I started with $250.... I wouldn't recommend it, but it's what I did.

It all depends.

I started off with $60, you need to think about all the cost's involved. Support, Billing, Hosting etc...

We started with basically nothing, reseller account, with just myself doing everything. You need to look at where you want to start, if you want to grow quickly you will need to have an advertising budget on top of all of your hosting, billing software, support software and staff costs.

One can find a reseller account with some $15, that comes with billing software, end user support, and pretty much all features in the book. It isn't all that's required to call oneself a hosting business, but for some, it was a start. Keep in mind that costs in this business are repetitive. The $15 bill will be due next month too, regardless of you getting any customers or not. ;)

A cost many don't put a value to, is time. If this is a "summer thing", you're likely to get a better return on your efforts if you get a regular job.

If your serious, start with 'As much as you can'.

You use the term 'Initial Budget' !
You need to be thinking about, 'start up costs', 'capital costs' & 'working capital'.

I started with £2000. Most of that was spent on a co-located server with parts allocated to software, hosting panels, support systems. The remainder was budgeted for marketing. As for staffing, I did all the work myself. I then got friends to help me on the promise of pay eventually :P

Weblazer,

A business license (varies state-to-state), a domain name (as low as $8-10 annually), and web site hosting (perhaps $5-20 monthly; varies considerably) may be all you need to get started. PayPal and other such payment processors can be used to keep your fixed costs down. As with anything, extra funding helps, but starting with a lean operation and growing over time can still produce excellent results on the Internet.

How hard is it to get a business license? Just fill out some papers and pay the fee or more to it?
