So are you a web hosting reseller? Do you have a dedicated server to sell shared hosting? It sounds like in your first post you are looking for an ISP. The ISPs available will be different in every area.
You're not running a datacenter to sell web hosting, are you?
zombie0hour 06-10-2008, 07:45 PM what i am gonig to do, is to buy a few servers (actual servers that i have right in front of me, not reselling ones you get over the internet) and host websites. Im doing it at my house since well im only 14 and im going to school.
kapina 06-10-2008, 08:18 PM I'm not trying to be rude, but please don't do it. Build some knowledge first, and collect the resources to run a business.
And yeah, there's a reason why everyone is using the rented-over-interweb servers. Running a decent datacenter is not easy.
Orien 06-10-2008, 08:27 PM You'd obviously need to colocate those servers, but you're 14... and I highly do not recommend that you continue on that path.
vibrokatana 06-10-2008, 08:32 PM And how exactly are you going to get over 10mbps upstream to your house? The big cost isn't the server itself but rather bandwidth (and power, which I imaging your dad wont appreciate the spike in the power bill).
Unless you want to set aside $1K/month to host from your house then you should rent from a data center or better yet don't do so at all. Selling web services should be done by someone who has the experience and can afford to have the infrastructure to support them.
EDIT: removed quote to avoid confusion
vibrokatana 06-10-2008, 08:43 PM Welcome to WHT, you seem to fit right in.
I hate being negative, but people go off on a tangent without thinking about how, why or if they can do it.
Business 101:
- What you have (skills, assets)
- What you can offer (services, products)
- What is the competition and what can you offer that they can't
- Is it feasible/profitable
The best bet would be for him to start off with a resellers package if he really wants to kick this off. He wont be spending several thousands of dollars on an unknown proposition and he will be able to pull out without tearing off a limb cost wise.
If you are looking for cheap, you shouldn’t start a datacenter and it certainly shouldn't be out of your house. I like your spirit and don't want you to be discouraged but you need to learn EVERYTHING about web hosting before you start this project.
We can't all be Server, Network, Web design, Information Security, and Marketing gurus. That's we buy services from our suppliers and sell services to our customers.
You're young enough now to take the time to learn so that you will be the best prepared when you start a business.
zombie0hour 06-10-2008, 08:57 PM its ok, not like im going to buy servers anytime soon. It will be 1-2 years before i make an investment becasue obvisoualy i do not have the kind of money that most you do. I will being doing reserch to learn all about servers before then. Would supplying data space for back-ups and storage be a better place to start? Like buy some external hard-drives? And also, this reselling as you would call it, where and how could i get set-up for this, as it seems to be an easy solution for the time being.
azizny 06-10-2008, 09:07 PM Instead of starting in the "hosting business" instead go into the "advertising business". It is perfect for part time students.
Check out programs like adsense (a good forum is forums.digitalpoint.com).
Peace,
zombie0hour 06-10-2008, 09:17 PM so can anyone tell me how to get started with re-selling acounts and what-not. Like the websites to rent the servers from, and how to sell them and stuff. Thanks

Do you even know how to setup a website? Sorry some of your wording makes me wonder.
You may want to visit the Reseller's Hosting Forum (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=3) and browse around for awhile to get a feel of what the better hosts are (if you insist on continuing).
EDIT: link to resellers forum
Thread cleaned a bit.
Let's try to stay on topic, and not beat up on the new guy, ok? :wht:

Sure.
First, learn how to manage a business, by creating a solid business plan, outlining expenses vs cost, including techs to work on support while you're not available.
Then:
Learn how to support your clients, including having contact methods like a support desk.
Then:
Figure out how you're going to enter into contracts to buy things (being 14 has disadvantages) like hosting, and how you're going to collect money/payments (most places like Paypal require you to be older to obtain an account).
Then:
Create a website to sell from. That involves buying a domain name, and obtaining hosting for it. Purchase a reseller account (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=130), and determine a way to manage your clients (numerous client manager scripts out there for sale or rent).
Then:
Advertise, and get a few clients to start off.
If you're really dedicated to the process, you might actually start making money. If you think you're going to open a company and get rich without effort, no, that won't happen.
Good luck.
