Hi all,

I am looking to set up a web hosting server just as a small time project in my home, I am looking to use Ubuntu Server Edition 8.04 LTS. Could anyone advise me on how to go about setting up a web hosting server?

If you're asking how to configure a server then you probably shouldn't be trying to configure a server :)

There are a lot of good server management companies you can hire to configure and manage Linux.

Or, you could purchase a managed server from a managed hosting company. But, configuring one yourself when you don't know how is probably asking for trouble down the line.

Ok, I see what you mean, where would you recommend to purchase a managed server from, this is my first project so i don't want to be spending too much money? Would i be able to have any hosting control panel i want installed?

Thanks!

Unfortunately, WHT's rules would prohibit me from answering that question honestly :) That said, just search around web hosting talk... there are hundreds of providers that lurk on these forums and occasionally make a post here and there :)

I only know of a few providers that don't offer control panels, almost everyone offers some kind of variety of Cpanel, Plesk, Helm, etc. You should be able to find a control panel easily.

What kind of hardware are you looking for?

i was looking for one that offered both hosting management, billing and support in one, ive had a look at some managed servers they are quite expensive for such as me who is just starting, cheapest i have found is around $100 a month.

There is always a third option of buying a budget server and then hiring a server management company like Touch Support or Easy Server Management to manage it.

The downside: You have to deal with two companies, two bills, two services, etc.
The upside: You can probably save a small amount of money by doing it this way.

Managed servers (at least good ones) cost what they do for a reason... Many are hands-off meaning you don't have to manage it at all, others are partially or semi managed where you handle some of the tasks and the provider handles the other.

BTW -- A total of $100 per month is probably not going to get you much :/

Getting a VPS (Virtual Private/Dedicated Server) might be best for you. All the same control and software as a dedicated server, but a fraction of the price. You get 'root' access to a server with its own private disk and memory.

Until you have a high volume of visitors to your sites a VPS will be fine.
