Hi all . . .
I have a registration with GODADDY that now has 9 years remaining. Understanding that the maximum I can register a domain name is 10 years — and that the free 1-year extension bundled with all transferred domains will neatly bring my 9-year domain back up to a full 10-year registration, once transferred — I am interested in transferring the domain to (New Registrar) because they offer FREE PRIVACY on all transfers and new registrations.
1. Is that privacy in effect for every year I am registered . . . even though 9 of those years were purchased elsewhere?
2. Alternately, can I have my name registered with GODADDY . . . but purchase my PRIVACY plan with a different registrar?

1.) that depends on your new registrar, if they offer privacy as free anyway you will get it for the whole time, otherwise just for one year.
2.) maybe there are some 3rd party services offering that, no registrar will give you that service if the domain is registered with an other registrar.

It is not possible yet.

That's an interesting question about privacy, and I wonder why no external companies have begun offering such a privacy service. It would seem easy to undercut (on a price level certainly) the fairly expensive privacy services offered by the registrars themselves.

It is actually possible...and been done.
Only catch is the 3rd party WHOIS privacy service provider eventually stopped it due to being unable to manage its inherent risks.

If the private whois is given free for only 1 year, u will have only 1 year for free. If it is totally free like name.com it will be available to be enabled anytime.
I don't think wide to register a domain on a registrar and use a separate company for the private whois, what if they do something odd and steal your domain or the registrar takes it from you?
Better look for a godaddy reseller that offers it, or simply go to a registrar that is not crazy to steal your domain on the first opportunity at all.

It depends on a registrar.

Now that is my solution! Thank you so much Hikari. :D

Take note that name.com's private whois is totally buggy.
I had a few times it disabled all of a sudden and when I noticed I re-enebled.
Mail forward didn't work, I tested to set my email to yahoo and gmail and it kept bouncing or no answser at all, until I used my host email and finally got a bounce saying that their forwarder is blacklisted on spamhous due to spam.
I sent lots of emails to them complaining. They replied all of them, but just saying their development department was dealing with it and asking to wait, but never came back, just asked to wait more when I sent other email.
So, email forward doesn't work at all, and sometimes bounces. At least, with luck, ppl will not see our privacy :)
