My wife's students are on a national project to do some work relating to youths of single parent family.

They intend to do escrapebook, photos, videos, song, quotations, stories.

Do you know of any free software or sites that can be used?

I would recommend that you sign up for a cheap or free hosting account that has at least 1 mysql database and then install an opensource CMS
Try this site: http://www.opensourcecms.com/index.php they have all opensource CMS listed and demos so that you can try them out.

The CMS joomla (http://joomla.org) can do what you need and I would recommend it.
