Would appreciate recommendations for domain name registration companies (other than Network Solutions).

Ive had some experience lately with
http://www.000domains.com
They are very simple and easy to use, and I think their domain reg. is 13.50 per year?
Ive seen lots of positive reviews here and at Sitepoint on 000domains.

They are indeed $13.50 On the two occasions I've e-mailed 000domains.com (when I was transferring my own domains), I received an answer in under 20 minutes and 30 minutes, respectively.

We have 12 names registered with 000domains.com.

We have used other services but the OpenSRS format and ease of use that 000domains uses suits us best.

Hi Phil

I echo the 000domains.com recommendations. Reason I chose 000domains after being introduced to them on this forum--thanks folks!--last October: Combination of the following hierarchically ordered (well, pretty much) factors: Relatively non-restrictive service agreement (especially when contrasted with that of NSI) , easy-to-use Domain Manager, attentive support, financial stability (backed by Tucows), and price.

i haven't heard of this company until recently, but upon visiting their site for the first time... there was a liver support feature that allowed me to ask questions :)

$10 domain registration!

I have been using http://www.totalnic.com to register
all of my domains, prices range from $20 per year
to $30 for two-years and more plans to pick from.

They have online edits for DNS, your info and etc.

alpha,

Beware of shopping for a registrar by price alone. A registrar is nearly as important as a host. If service is unknown, they can be risky. I know I've used, alldns.com, is .75 cheaper than 000domains.com, and gives absolutely horrid service. Their system is the worst, worse even than NSI's, and they ignore messages unless you threaten to use an attorney.

There are others out there that may be as bad. Caveat emptor.

I recently discovered PowerPipe.com and have registered 6 domain names with them. At under $9/year, its one of the least expensive that I've come across. Last night I went to modify my DNS and today the domain is already pointing to the correct servers. Most impressive! I highly recommend them ---> PowerPipe.com

And (just for an alternative), I always suggest a 000domains like OpenSRS registrar http://www.weblaunching.net (with which I've had good experiences with). Saves you a buck and 1/2 over 000domains.

Well I recommend directNIC ( http://www.directnic.com ) an OpenSRS reseller.
Domains @ $15/year with free email/web forwarding and free webspace. You can also change contact/nameserver details without charge and wait (unlike Network Solutions for the wait that is!).

Rgds.

very good point, but the first time i went to their site (clicked on link from this forum) i had a few questions and they had livehelper running on their site!

i went on asked my questions, they answered promptly :)

i was looking for the livehelper now but i don't see it anymore! they even had the live support times listed

I really appreciate everyone taking the time to advise me on my problem. Price is really not the issue for me. All I need to be happy is for the registrar to do their job! That seems like reasonable expectations, doesn't it?

I opted to go with http://000domains.com, simply because it had the most recommendations.

Wow, domain registration and liver support... now that's what I call a full-service registrar. :)

And look what else they offer:

Stargate now offers complete control over modifying name server entries for your domains. Modify mail servers, IP addresses and host names FREE.

Don't miss out on this incredible offer, register today!

WOW! Such a deal. They don't charge for the same things that even NSI doesn't charge for, making basic changes.

I'm impressed!
[/sarcasm]

They may very well be a good registrar. Their system (is it online like Open SRS) and their service after you plunk down your money have yet to be determined. If you fall for gimmicks, you deserve whatever happens to you.

I've had no problems with Dotster.com, although it can be a little bit pricey compared to 000domains. But, they have good service, and an easy to use adminstering system. ;)

Directnic is also nice, and the price is the same as Dotster.com . I moved out of Directnic a long time ago because I was having problems accessing my account there using my own computer. (My connection sucks.) Now, since they've redesigned their site, I absolutely have no problems whatsoever with the domains I still have hosted there.

I have several names registered with directnic, but I am not pleased with their support. They response within 24-48 business hours, but the responses do not necessary address my questions or problems.

Also, when I transfered a domain to them from NSI, directnic modified the DNS info to their name servers. Consequently, my site was down for almost five days, and e-mails to that domain were undelivered.

The only bright note is that they are still better than NSI.

Expect DirectNic.com to cease OpenSRS reselling. DirectNic has recently become ICANN accredited. Their own registry isn't operational yet, but I guess they're working on it...

Well, actually personally i don't see a point in choosing registar taking their quality of support in the account. As for me, most impotant parameters are: financial and networking stability, quick changes in the domain database, and easy to use control over your domains, all this summed with a good price, and you're the king.
But maybe, that's true only for me, since i don't need support rep. to answer my question how to set up an MX record ;)
Anyways, if there is no ideal solution, what prohibits us to team up, and create one ? ;)
