What happens is I download an MP3 and if I like it enough to have paid for it - I go buy the album or single. --Shaun Phrozen 08-25-2002, 09:53 PM Originally posted by creid and to the other guy.. IGobyTerry 08-25-2002, 10:12 PM I download them all the time. I try to get the album right as it comes out. However if it is a band I really like then I will buy the album, but for those that I only listed to 5-10 times then I'm not getting my money's worth buying a CD for $20. 2Grumpy 08-25-2002, 11:28 PM Absolutely! At $16.99 sometimes more! per CD I'm gonna hear AT LEAST most of it before I buy it, that's too much cash to risk buying a CD that might suck other than that "one good song". Then when I buy the CD I rip it to MP3 myself, delete the "tainted" ones (who knows what they messed up and the ID3 tags are IMPORTANT to me). And then I burn MP3's to CD-r to use in my car (http://www.grimster.org/inside.jpg for a peak at the inside of my Tracker, can you believe I got the back seat back in it? haha no lie, I'll get pictures tomorrow). If I download mp3's and DO NOT like the CD other than that 1 good song, I delete the crap, keep the one good song and thank dal.net that I didn't waste $18 on a sorry CD. I buy a LOT of CD's a lot more after I found shoutcasts and mp3's on irc, I get exposed to so much more music and then buy the stuff I like. Hostkookster 08-25-2002, 11:54 PM I've got 20GB's of everything imagineable! I download all the time, I never let a file download on its own. I've also got several AVI's. Hell I've got the whole Sienfeld collection! :D ned patter 08-26-2002, 07:48 AM I download about 10 MP3's a month. skylab 08-26-2002, 08:03 AM i download well over a hundred mp3s a month (18.6gb at the moment). however, i only download from independent artists and from net-labels that release royalty free material licensed for re-distribution specifically by the artists and/or labels. i have no use for 99.9% of the music that falls under the influence of the RIAA, nor will i ever. Dymex 08-26-2002, 08:05 AM i download about 50-70 mp3's a month. wwww 08-26-2002, 08:15 AM I stopped buying cd's...a burner and broadband is all I need :D StarGate 08-26-2002, 08:59 AM Guilty as charged. Reason: Prices for Music CDs are outrageous. People who think this hurts the artists... WRONG! Artists get ripped off by the RIIA, they make 95% of the money leaving artists to starve so screw them! Give me a good somg as MP3 which I wil lreally like and I will donate 10-20$ jsut for that song to the artist ANYTIME! Same with software. I donated 30$ to Trillian btw... I DO aprechaite software and I am prepared to pay for it but it has to be quality and not funding for Bill Gates' 304th BMW... davidb 08-26-2002, 09:06 AM I downloaded one in the last 8 months. I rarely do it, I did it at first when napster came out, but then stopped. Anyone remember getting mp3's without that stuff? If I ever want one now I used the web, I wouldnt touch that kaza crap. NocSol, where did you hear RIIA keeps 95% Alex[nl] 08-26-2002, 09:07 AM I love mp3, cause sometimes I can d/l things that can never be bought. Eg, I downloaded a live recording of Compay Segundo someone taped (with his approval) in a club in Cuba in 1991... recording is bad, but you can hear the public react .. its great! I'd say its even better then most of de discs I bought of him ... I usually buy my cd's, but since they are ~22 euro here (~22 us$ ;)) I dont buy that many anymore.... wwww 08-26-2002, 09:14 AM [i]I wouldnt touch that kaza crap. [/B] Kazaa is harmless if you use it together with DietK! ;) 2Grumpy 08-26-2002, 10:45 AM I've heard more than a few artists comment that the money is in the touring and how they don't make much off record sales, unless you're a huge seller (Metallica, etc) you don't get a contract that's in your favor wrt record sales, but touring is your real income. Aplusmedia 08-26-2002, 11:13 AM what is MP3? never heard of it. ;) okihost 08-26-2002, 11:26 AM I am not positive but I saw Eminem on MTV going to a record store and buy his own cd a comment on the fact that he only makes $1 off each cd that sells.. could it be that bad? ned patter 08-26-2002, 11:55 AM Originally posted by OKIHost I am not positive but I saw Eminem on MTV going to a record store and buy his own cd a comment on the fact that he only makes $1 off each cd that sells.. could it be that bad? Well that's what OKI a few billion and don't forget artists music videos and the actual ones on video not the ones you see played on MTV the ones you buy for what say £10-£20 and don't forget they have there music vids on dvd these days. I bought a wu tang for my little sister cause she fancys little shyheim and turns out the dvd only had two music songs on it and i payed £23 for the dvd out of HMV which i like but they let me down. clocker1996 08-26-2002, 01:50 PM mp3s rule kazaa lite baby LOL www.kazaalite.com Gary King 08-26-2002, 03:17 PM Last option  XTStrike 08-26-2002, 04:44 PM i dont "download" them as such, I get them sent to me, I have auto accept on, so in theory im not deliberately downloading illeagl music. :D Rotifer 08-26-2002, 08:04 PM I am not positive but I saw Eminem on MTV going to a record store and buy his own cd a comment on the fact that he only makes $1 off each cd that sells.. could it be that bad? One of my buddies is an artist's rep for Sire records ... only the most successful and powerful artists receive $1 per CD (Madonna, Michael Jackson), most receive pennies. Most of the pennies are eaten up by advances. 99.9% of the band's income is from touring. I love mp3's, the problem is that the only people that benefit from them are the musicians. I can't count the number of bands I have discovered online, many of whose concerts I've attended. I still buy choice cd's - after previewing them via mp3. ned patter 08-26-2002, 08:25 PM Yep i think people with CD burners just copy mp3's onto cd's but people without cd burners will still buy the music out the shop. I always just used to copy them onto tape when i never had a CD burner but no one does that these days for some off reason even considering tapes take up less room and last for longer mostly. shaunewing 08-26-2002, 10:52 PM I recently (about a month ago) bought a Sony NetMD (Minidisc) player/recorder and have been putting all my MP3s and CDs onto it. I've got 5 discs so far and will be buying some more this week. Makes for great listening when out and about. After getting a minidisc player - there is absolutely no way I would want an MP3 player. Despite the higher initial cost (mine cost AU$500), they're easy to use, have great battery life (plus you just recharge it when you get home), and the media is cheap - an AU$5.00 disc will store just under 5 hours of music in LP4 mode. All you do is plug the USB cable into the player and transfer the mp3 files over (it converts them to ATRAC3 format first) and off you go :) Battery life is rated at 15 hours continuous play with the rechargeable battery or about 50 hours continuous play with a standard AA battery so it lasts for a few days commuting, etc. before needing to be recharged (which takes a few hours and you can listen whilst it is being recharged). --Shaun web docta 08-26-2002, 11:26 PM I have about 1000 vinyl Albums that I never use anymore because it's too much trouble and my turntable isn't set up anymore. :bawling: But I also have about 26GB of mostly Napster downloads that I listen to all the time. Nice and clear! Thanks, Napster where ever you are. :D |
