How many webmasters here use a favicon.ico on their website(s)?

Now, how many of you actually remember to make this thing?? I've been working on my site for over a year now, and just remembered about this tiny 16x16 graphic!

I haven't made one of these guys in years. Created this one a few mins ago in Photoshop.

on client sites at work i've never bothered - if they ask for it then sure, but that is pretty rare.

I always change the favicon

Makes the site look good.

I sometimes use this tool to help me change from png to ico quickly: http://converticon.com/

you don't need a tool, you can just export it as gif and rename it to .ico. This works for bmp as well.

aha! You learn something intresting every day :) This is why I love the web

export as gif and rename to ico, does that keep the same quality as if I convert png to ico directly?

for me it did, only be sure the resolution is correct so it won't distort! I thought png > ico is possible as well, BTW

The best thing would be having your favicon designed rather then converted. Simple conversion will not create all the images that should be included in the favicon, you will only get a 16x16 one. Missing the 32x32 image means that a shortcut icon placed on a desktop will be scaled up and look terrible.
