View Full Version : Need a webdesigner who'll work for free? :)

Hi. I have a lot of free time these days - and after seeing a couple of inspiring flash sites, I've decided that I need more practice before I dive in again.

I can provide anyone with a website - I'll design it, host it on my own server [if you don't have one] - all for free.

Here are the catches:
1. If you're looking into getting a domain name, or any other extra stuff like vbulletin - I'm sorry, I'm not that kind to put money into that. If you want those, you pay for it - and tell me the information I need to integrate it into the site I'm designing for you.

2. The project must be small - I don't want to design a portal, nor a search engine, nor an e-commerce site. A company site belonging to a small business, someone who wants to make a site for a free software/shareware , clan sites, band sites, any project that you consider small - are all acceptable to me. Big projects just take too much time and not just worth it. If you're looking for someone who do those things for a reasonable price, I could refer you to them.

3. I like designing from the ground-up. I refuse to just do the navbar, or just the intro or any elements. I prefer to design a site from scratch. I'm weird. I know.

4. As much as possible, I prefer to tackle a project that I can do in flash more than just an html site. After all, I'm offering my service for free because I want to learn more about flash.

I think those are pretty reasonable requests. If I become swamped with requests, rest assured that I'll do them all - but I'll be placing priority over who was first , or which cause is more worthwhile. [a charity site will be a priority for me].

Pay? Uh... I said it was free right? BUT, if you insist in paying me, and knowing the rules of this forum, I highly advice just giving me Amazon's gift check. I just love buying new books. In fact, I'm needing a couple more books.. *hint hint!* ;P

Anyway, here are my skills so far:
HTML, Javascript, Coldfusion, PHP, Flash, photoshop. I think these skills are enough to show you what I'm capable of.

BUT. Where's the portfolio? Coming up!
http://www.meycauayan.net -
http://www.digitalketchup.com - my company.
http://www.intextelecom.com
http://www.kgmtechnologies.com

Portfolio is arranged from earliest designs to latest ones.

Email me at jonathan@digitalketchup.com with the header "Re: Free web design" . I'll respond promptly. Sorry for the long post!

Your sites are actually good, I was expecting the worse when I heard the word free..

Actually, working for free was how I started. ;) Designers can only get better if they practice a lot - I just run out of site concepts for myself, and making a personal homepage doesn't really appeal to me. So here I am. ;)

Thanks for the nice compliments though. ;)

I checked your sites and want to comment - nice works, keep it up!

Usually we reciev few queries for web designing. I will keep your information handy and forward them to you, if you don't mind.

I agree with Charles.

There's a grand equation that usually adds up to:

Free webdesign = sh*t

But you're actually very good *lol* Rest assured your inbox is about to be flooded with 2000 odd members in this forum.

I might point out one thing to hosts though. Flash isn't the best choice for a corporate site such as a webhosting co. If people are hitting dozens of hosts looking for a new one the last thing they want to see is:

<<loading>>

JJ's flash does load fast, which is a pleasant change. We host a nice 'quikloader' http://www.macsystem.com.co/ so as you can see, it can be done.

Maybe a good solution for both parties (JJ and everyone here) is maybe a flash presentation 'ad' type thing. One of those "Click here to see our Flash Presentation" things. It might break down a few structures for JJ to work his magic :) and give everyone else a chance to get something that will add to their site, rather than stonewall potential customers.

JJ,
I presume you've seen these ones?

What are those sites? I hate the first one and third one. I think the second one is ok though. Those three sites get me lost. :(

hehe..

They are perfect examples of actionscripting flash in it's purest form (one and three). Your post is the perfect example of the 'darkside' of Flash. To people who love Flash and can be bothered to fish their way through 'mystery meat' navigation these are great examples of the art of flash. To someone looking for a sub $10 a month hosting account, it's <back> button all the way :)

I like 'gentle' flash powered site. but those three sites are too much for me. Like you said, I had to hit 'back' button. I tried to navigate the site but my eyes. Ow~

by the way, theplonk's sites are ok for me. I can navigate and enjoy the layout :) Nice job.

Thanks for the kind compliment's guys. ;)

Akashik: Yes, I am very much familiar with those three sites. I must agree with Klisis though that one and three got me lost, especially yugop's. Praystation is okay, after you understand its main purpose. <I don't know either, so don't go asking me! ;P>

As for Turtleshell, sigh - that's one of the sites that got me started. But seriously, I get my inspirations from http://www.2advanced.com,(and his various works) http://www.eneri.net, http://www.neostream.com and a lot more. Balthaser.com is one too.

I believe if you just dispense with all the frills and what nots of flash design, you'll end up with a product that is suited for corporate design. I try my best to follow what other good flashers do - little or no intro and just straight to the content of the site. ;)

Just an aside though, when did Webhostingtalk.com get back on line? I visited once long ago after hearing the recent troubles and entered a ultimatebb site instead of the usual vbulletin. Its nice however to see that the original posts are still here and that people have come back to this site. My design company wouldn't be making money right now if we chose the wrong host! ;)

Thanks for the praise again. ;) I hope I can live up to everybody's expectations and finish the projects on time. I advertised on Sitepoint, here, a couple of gaming sites [blizzard, planetquake, counter-strike.net], were-here.com and flashkit. Frankly, most of my request comes from Sitepoint and here. So I'll be posting finished projects right here on this thread so that at least I can show you guys I'm doing something. ;)

how did you learn flash? i want to learn so badly but dont know where to start.

theplonk

Try learning from the tutorials first. After that, try going through Flashkit's extensive tutorials, or Turtleshell's tutorials. I did this, and rounded up everything I knew by buying a book. ;) James Mohler's [I think that's the name] books are very helpful when it comes to learning flash. ;)

After that, try doing some simple animations, then move to presentations, then websites - then anything goes. ;)

Hope that helped. ;) Always glad to help an aspiring flasher. ;)

teck, I hope you find it useful. If you need help, I could always help you out. You know where to find me, and my email to boot. ;)

Unfortunately, Flash does not come cheap. I forgot how much it is, but you can find it at Amazon.com or at Macromedia's site. ;) It's worth it though, and bundle it with Ultradev and Fireworks, plus Photoshop, you can make a lot of good-looking, functional sites in no time. ;)
