Does anyone out there know of a valid way of controlling bandwidth on a Windows 2000 Server?

I have seen control panels out there advertising that you can limit bandwidth, but when I research them it seems that are all using the IIS throttling feature, and to be perfectly honest that does not work.

Read the following articles and you will see what I mean.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q238145&
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;EN-US;q239037&

So basically using this methond is a waste of time.

We have looked into this, and have come up with absolutely nothing that can do it on the Windows Platform, and are one step away from setting up a Linux Server that will manage bandwidth to each IP address. We found a great piece of software that will do this.

So if any of you developers out there have any idea of any software or methods of doing bandwidth limiting on a Windows 2000 Server please help us out :)

Thanks

There isn't really a way that is available in IIS. The closest you can get using the more high level functionality available is to shut a website down once it reaches its limit.

Most hosts wouldn't find this acceptable. If this is the sort of thing you were thinking about?

I just came accross this today. Don't know anything about the product or the company, but it might be useful. I'm about to try it myself

Agreed. Seems to just report it, not control it. I guess you could get these figures from the stats pages.

Command Matrix (http://www.etrinix.com) has the ability to set the bandwidth allowance. Unfortunately there is no Documentation available so I don't know how it is managing or controlling it. So, if there are any users out there, could they enlighten us please?

It depends what is the action to take when a limit is reached. The bandwidth throttling will try and stop the limit reached but its would mean a sacrifice of site speed.

You should mention something on the webhost automation forum. They'll probably have something integrated into Helm.

Any news on this ?
I'm thinking to get a Windows server ... but still cant found a solution to control bandwidth on a GBYTES value (ie Gb/month)
Command Matrix seems to supports this ... but dunno :P

Anyone ?

asics: Command Matrix supports the 1st and 2nd features you need..

cascompany: YES, Command Matrix supports bandwidth usage limited on the basis of usage, not IIS throttling. It infact accounts for the ftp and mail usage as well...
