View Full Version : Rackshack.net users, post here!
Surfer 03-13-2001, 05:46 AM Hi all,
I have noticed that there have been a couple of users that have signed up with Rackshack.net since I signed up with them almost two weeks ago.
Since rackshack hasn't yet launced a BB for us users, I guess this is our best place to hang out.
Anyway, I thought it would be nice if everyone that has signed up with them would post here so that we can help eachother with specific rackshack issues and configurations etc.
In your post add:
Which RAQ package you have (which configuration)
What packages you have installed (MySQL, webalizer...)
What other software you have compiled...
How long you have been with Rackshack.net
Had any problems so far?
I will start of:
I have their RAQ4i 128MB 20GB package $99/month + $5 TAX
I have installed the MySQL 3.22.32 package from Cobalt and it's running fine.
I have also modifed access.conf to allow .htaccess files
I plan on installing webalizer...
My RAQ came with PHP version 4.0.3
Have been with Rackshack for almost two weeks and support has been good so far, except for one inccident when I needed an update in their DNS and it took three days to do it as the person in charge was on holiday.
Speed has been great!! Better that my old host!
Uptime has been 100%
I think that's all...
Regards
Michael
why not create a forum for rackshack and place it on your site? this is a cobalt forum, not a rackshack forum you know..
Surfer 03-13-2001, 07:17 AM I know, I just thought it would be nice to see who at WHT has signed up with Rackshack.
I have proposed to rackshack to add my own forum, but it's really no use if they won't add a link to their site...
I think they want to do their own BB...
Phiberop 03-14-2001, 04:43 AM I have their RaQ 4i as well, pretty much the same setup as you have. I haven't done anything with ASP on a RaQ before but I am working on a trouble ticket system as well as a database I can access to check for accounts in queue for setup. I never have been to thrilled with instant setup, I prefer to see who is actually signing up just in case there are any problems that may be avoided by entering account manually -- just paranoid I guess :)
Im not 100% sure on this but I think I remember seeing one of their tech's in chat tell somebody they get the first 8 ip's free and then they are sold in blocks of 4 thereafter. I did request an additional 4 ip's, got them about 10 minutes later and didn't get charged so Im assuming this is correct.
Regards,
Mike
Surfer 03-14-2001, 06:32 PM That's cool!!
I was wondering why I wasn't charged for my 4 IP's!
Now I can safely order another 4...
Thanks
Mike the newbie 03-14-2001, 08:00 PM How has the bandwidth to the backbone been for you at rackshack?
Phiberop 03-14-2001, 10:58 PM Bandwidth seems to be OK. I have had some friends in all different parts of the world load up my website and I didn't have any complaints from them.
Regards,
Mike
Surfer 03-15-2001, 05:38 AM Speed has been very good and very stabile so far...with no downtime, according to my monitor.
Yes, I confirmed with the tech support that you do get 8 IP's free.
netastic 03-15-2001, 11:12 AM what do they charge for a RaQ4r?
ghengismark 03-15-2001, 09:41 PM I just got myself a Raq4i from rackshack.net. I am actually new to web hosting, but my web development career is starting to take off, and I am sick of having no control over my sites.
Question regarding SSH: I installed the ssh package from pck.nl.cobalt.com, but only the server package. What is the client package for?
Also, I have Open SSH on my NT box at home, and I SSH to my Raq fine in shell, but I can't File transfer... I have SSH 2 on both machines. Why not? Anyone have this problem? I want to disable FTP if I can, and only allow SSH files. Or is FTP relatively secure?
Phiberop 03-15-2001, 11:03 PM I haven't done much with SSH but if I believe they make a sftp server/client for secure ftp that is needed if you wish to transfer files. I don't believe this package is included with the standard distro. Check out http://www.openssh.com for the exact details :)

Mike
brandonk 03-16-2001, 11:12 PM Hi there,
When I was considering Rackshack, i noticed that they charge I think a 9.5% tax on every account. No matter where you live, why is this? What is your $99 bill actually equal to?
Thanks,
Brandon
ghengismark 03-17-2001, 12:24 AM With first month ($99), setup ($250), and taxes on both, I got charged $376.16. They charge sales tax no matter where you live, since all of the services, and the server, are in texas. If they MAILED you a server, then there would be no tax. But the product remains in texas.
I recommend people get one if they dont have one... they only have 70 left... down from 142 when I bought mine 3 days ago.
Justin S 03-21-2001, 06:02 PM I just ordered the RaQ 4i $99/month package from RackShack, and must say it's great! They always have a bunch of tech support people in their IRC channel, which works out superbly for me. Are you sure you got PHP 4.0.3? Mine only came with 4.0.1pl2.
So far I havn't added anything to server, software wise. But I do plan on installing mySQL. Hey, I've only been with them 2 hours so far! :)
Yep I just got my rackshack too! I also got the same package as Justin, i want to install mySQL as well.. but i dont know how to yet.
Signed up with rackshack.net and I was impressed how fast everything was setup. I got the $99 package.
My only problem is that I have been waiting for two days to get additional ip's. The people in the chat room say they can't help. My only option is to wait I am told.
Has anyone else had trouble with additional ip's?
ghengismark 03-22-2001, 01:21 PM Ardi.. the easiest way to install on a raq is to get .pkg files. Then you can install them with a click of a button. Be sure to go to http://www.cobalt.com's downloads area and download all the lastest patch/upgrade .pkg files. Then go to http://pkg.nl.cobalt.com and you will find other useful pkg files, like MySQL, SSH server/client, webalizer statistics pkg, and more. the MySQL is an older version, but it works fine.
absolute 03-23-2001, 06:25 AM Finally ordered a 256MB Raq4i with these guys, so just wanted to say a quick "hi" to all of you fellow 'shackers.
In an update to a previous post... I too was informed that you get 8 free IP adresses from one of the tech guys, but you have to apply via email, giving reasons for each new number before they will give you them.
Was told 24-48 hours setup time, will update you on if this is the case.
josemv 03-23-2001, 10:31 PM Hi,
somebody could tell me how its the dns management with rackshack?
I'm thinking to get one Raq from them, but I was reading their policies and 3 to 7 days to setup a new domain is not aceptable for me.
Is there another way to do it?
Thanks
Jose
Phiberop 03-24-2001, 12:28 AM Hello,
They have a members area you login to and you have the ability to add domains to their dns. I added a domain and it was active about 5 minutes later.
Regards,
Mike
pgowder 04-04-2001, 10:26 AM I signed up last night. The activation was instant. I had a few questions and went to their chat room and got all the answers. So far it has been great.
Just go my Raq last week...setup was quick. Currently have serveral business level domains for my clients on a shared server and needed more control, so I went with rackshack.
Here's my setup
Raq4i/128MB/20GB Drive ???Has anyone upgraded to 256MB???
Setup 4 virtual sites...will be moving them this month.
Custom Additions
I tend to use redhat rpms or compile source code myself...
MySQL 3.32
Samba Server
SSH
BigBrother
Perl Modules for Database connectivity
POP before SMTP patch
All Cobalt updates...
Turned off
Telnet, FTP, Chilisoft
Will be adding:
Tripwire
logcheck
Taking down chilisoft helped with memory issues. We plan to run a few database apps and I am worried about memory issues. I generally find that even pentium pros can pump out web sites provided that they have sufficient memory.
What are the backup options at rackshack.net. As far as I can tell, you have to download your files or use sometype of network options. Has anybody been able to use the Arkeia successfully?
Thanks.
