View Full Version : Domain name review
Rehan 03-13-2001, 04:39 AM This isn't a typical web site review... There's no web site yet.
But I'd like to get some opinions on the domain HostCrest.com for a web hosting service. It doesn't sound too corny, does it? :)
klisis 03-13-2001, 10:47 AM Sorry, English isn't my first language here.
What does 'Crest' mean?
Rehan 03-13-2001, 11:03 AM Here are two definitions of "crest (http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=crest)" from the Webster's dictionary:
2 : something suggesting a crest especially in being an upper prominence, edge, or limit: as a : PEAK; especially : the top line of a mountain or hill b : the ridge of a roof c : the top of a wave
3 a : a high point of an action or process and especially of one that is rhythmic b : CLIMAX, CULMINATION <at the crest of his fame>
"HostCrest" isn't meant to really mean anything specific, though...
allan 03-13-2001, 11:05 AM Its a toothpaste :D. I think the message is that 4 out of 5 dentists recommend their web host :D.
I think the meaining that Rehan is going for is:
The highest or culminating point; the peak (usually used in reference to a Wave, or a Hill).
Its a good name for a hosting company. It implies the ultimate, or highest point in hosting. Of course its important to make sure that you follow through with that because there are a lot of ways to mock the name if you fall short (ie hostcresfallen.com :)).
NameDepot 04-08-2001, 10:40 PM I think my name, ezsiteHosting.com, is a more "brandable" domain name. If you're interested in leasing/purchasing/co-developing it, please let me know.
allan 04-08-2001, 10:51 PM I disagree, and this is my own personal opinion, but whenever I see "ez" in a cmopany name, I always feel they are a little cheesy. I don't mean this as a disparagement against your company, as I don't know what type of service you provide. However, I just never liked the "ez" phrase. In addition, you have added a level of complexity to people trying to remember who you are: is it ezsitehosting.com or easysitehosting.com. Unless you have both domains, you may run into some confusion.
NameDepot 04-08-2001, 11:01 PM easysitehosting.com is already in use by a hosting company....so, that should make life that much better for whoever wants my ezSiteHosting.com.
As for it being "chessy" that way us "namers" are using ez, that may well be the case, but on the other hand, every time you can make a name shorter, you are making it more valuable....plus, just wait awhile, more and more companies are using "ez"

Wouldn't that make it more difficult? Because if you buy the domain name, then you will never know how often you lost clients because they went to easysitehosting.com as opposed to ezsitehosting.com? Of course you could register ezsitehosting.net for probably a lot less than you are selling ezsitehosting.com :D.
NameDepot 04-08-2001, 11:43 PM hardly ever register my .nets. I like to leave leftovers for the "budget minded" amongst us!
Actually, it's a double edged sword, mostly positive for the buyer of ezSiteHosting.com....if the people at easysitehosting.com have been advertising etc, you can thus become an (indirect) beneficiary of that, I think.
DHWWnet 04-09-2001, 02:54 AM IMVHO, in this hosting business, i personally think a .NET is preferable over the .com
makes more sense to get the .Net if you are a hosting company and that is my .02 :)
NameDepot 04-09-2001, 02:59 AM posts soon, "Mark is an idiot, I got ezsitehosting.net". I am a "lame" namer (get it?!) that should be punished for not gettin' the .net, (thats a cardinal rule, "get the net").
akashik 04-09-2001, 05:11 AM Rehan,
Returning to *your* topic and not the namedepot show, it think it's a good one. I've seen enough ez, best, greatest, cheapest domains to last a life time. hostcrest shows a little class to me. I'd be far more interested in looking at a site with a name like that. With an elegant design in maybe gold, and green I think you may onto a winner there.
