Hi say you just purchased an image from iStockPhoto under a standard license, when you put the image up on your site do you need to say anything like, image sourced from istockphoto.com?

Well, that's where your answer is at. You have to ask the people who hold the license to the image, no one else is going to have your answer for you. Sorry. :(

You're on the right track though. :) If you can't find what you're looking for, try dropping them an e-mail and ask.

Because iStockphoto sells their products royalty free, you don't have to cite your source.

You do have to abide by iStockPhoto's licensing agreement, which regulates how the image can be used (# of impressions, distribution, sale, etc.)

You can find the license here: http://www.istockphoto.com/license.php

Ok found what I was looking for, also according to this I can not put it on my website because that would allow it to be downloaded and accessed by a third party? How then are people able to use this on websites?

#For clarity, you may not use the Content in products for resale, license or other distribution, unless (i) the proposed use is allowable under an Extended License which is available for the Content; or (ii) if the original Content has been fundamentally modified or transformed sufficiently that it constitutes an original work entitling the author or artist to copyright protection under applicable law, and where the primary value of such transformed or derivative work is not recognizable as the Content nor is the Content capable of being downloaded, extracted or accessed by a third party as a stand-alone file (satisfaction of these conditions will constitute the work as a “Permitted Derivative Work” for the purposes of this Agreement).

# use or display the Content in an electronic format that enables it to be downloaded or distributed via mobile devices or shared in any peer-to-peer or similar file sharing arrangement;
