My host only get GD Graphic library 1.6.3. and I need GD 2.0 (really REALLY better).

Can I install it myself or should I ask to my host please ? (I've got a linux shared web hosting).

Only your host can install them.

unless you have root access which i really doubt....

This will require you to recompile PHP. There are some threads over at rackshack's forums about installing PHP4.2.2 with GD2.0 support. I have used them and they work well. But as pointed out above, you will need to be root.
