View Full Version : Just went dedicated with RackShack

Hello,

I have been thinking of getting a dedicated server for some time and get away from reselling accounts and move on with things. Im not a linux expert but I do know some so I figured a RaQ might not be a bad idea to start with and get the hang of running a server before jumping right into a standard linux box. I signed up for Rackshack's $99 RaQ4 early afternoon today and everything appeared to work OK. I waited about an hour and no welcome email had made it my way yet. I was a bit concerned since most other people on the forum said they got nearly instant setup so I logged into their support chat. I talked to Brian and several people and they figured it was a problem with the automated signup not fully completing properly, Brian was not 100% sure where to go from here so he contacted the support manager at home (sorry but I don't remember your name :0) and he spoke with me and we ended up getting everything squared away in a couple of minutes. Everything is up and running now and my website is in the process of being transferred. I myself am always a bit skeptical about new hosts but I decided to take a chance with them anyways and so far so good. I'll keep everybody posted on how the service is.

Now I just gotta edit my site for the new equipment oh joy!!

It's nice having all that space to yourself hehe ;)

Regards,

Mike S

P.S. Any mods reading this know why my Mike S. login doesn't work here anymore?? I had to register a new account on the boards.

Keep us updated. I was thinking about going with them after I get some credit issues cleared up :). I heard about the auto e-mail not going in in their chat room too. More than a few people have had that problem recently.

Rackshack also had most of the updates already done on the RaQ, only one I needed to download was the BIND update... sure it doesn't take much time, but I think it's good practice. I signed up for 4webspace.net but had to try Rackshack because 4webspace wouldn't have RaQ's till this week sometime, I remember reading on 4webspace's AUP upon signing up about a fine if your server was compromised. I think it is nice knowing that a company is security minded (installing the patches for it's customers already) and takes the time to help make things just a bit more secure. They are still new to the hosting world though... only time will tell.

Regards,

Mike

I signed-up yesterday as well, and so far everything has been great! I got a setup confirmation immediately, so that wasn't a problem for me. Isn't their chat support great? I'm really liking this...

What did you get? What for? Any word on my domain either?

The $99 RaQ 4i. Why did I get it? Well, uh, to host my sites. Did that ever cross your mind? :) The domain is the same as always. Email me if you want to talk.

I thought you were gonna put all of your sites on it. Of course, to host site's, I figured it would be a new project or something.

Ok.

::EDITED:: To reflect that Justin does not look or condone pornography. It was a joke.

RackShack doesn't allow porn. Actually they don't allow "adult related material" kinda ambiguous this expression...

Assuming it's not illegal, I'm not sure why a hosting company would have restriction on what you can put on a dedicated server. Maybe Rackshack is worried that someone will *actually use* the 150 gigs of bandwidth they include with the $99 box.

I didn't see any anti-adult contect terms at its website. If it's legal, I think it OK. right?

From the Rackshack AUP:
http://www.rackshack.net/aboutus/aup.asp

---QUOTE---
You may not use your dedicated rack or virtual site to publish material, which Rackshack.Net determines, at its sole discretion, to be unlawful, indecent or objectionable. For purposes of this policy, "material" refers to all forms of communications including narrative descriptions, graphics (including photographs, illustrations, images, drawings, logos), executable programs, video recordings, and audio recordings. NO ADULT orientated material may be stored on your dedicated rack or virtual site.

I don't think you guys get this.

Justin has no pornography. It was a joke that I made to him, inferring that he did. He doesn't. He want's to put a couple of his sites on it. He informed me that he does not like, or condone pornography himself.

Still don't get it?

astralexis

Sure...

It's just interesting that a dedicated hosting provider has such a vague term excluding "Adult Related Material" which could be just about anything, who knows, probably a "supermodel site" is already adult related :)

It means that they don't actually want to give the amount of bandwidth they promise...

I'm sure if you asked them they would give you the exact details as to what constitutes an adult site. That didn't really affect me, since I wasn't storing any adult content.

And I'm sure most of us know that a RaQ with those specs could never handle 150 GBs of bandwidth. It would probably crash and burn before ever reaching that number, wouldn't you think?

I am thinking about getting a server with raqshack. I need another server like yesterday and I have been for over a week like number 4 or TB list or new servers. I want to know what people think of RackShack before I buy.

Hello,

The wait you are experiencing at TB is what prompted me to signup with Rackshack. I was skeptical at first because they were new, but I took a chance and all has been good so far (about a month).

Mike

I can only recommend them as well. The people in the chat support might not know that much but they always manage to find a person fast within some minutes who can help.

Everyone is saying that someone is new who are you talking about Rackshack or TB?

I'll vouch for them too. I had to get my server restored and they called me at home before they did and then again when it was finished. I've had no downtime in the past two weeks which is quite the opposite of what I experienced at Tera-Byte.

So from what I am hearing Rackshack.net is the way to go. I spoke to someone at Rackshack.net and they said once your card is approved your server would be up within 5 minutes. I thought that was great.

Are there any cons about going with rackshack that any one knows of?

They have zero tolerance for SPAM. If one of your clients SPAM, the server is gone. No 2nd chances.

So they want say hey fix it or lose it. Thats kinda harsh. I know I have had a spammer from time to time and TB just fwds me the email and I kick the user off and if I have to do any investegating charge them a fee for that.

Rackshack is VERY scrict on their SPAM policy, however I believe they do realize that many of their dedicated RaQ's are used for web hosting and they wouldn't just terminate an account like that. With that said, no it doesn't mean if one of your users spams you will never have to pay a pentalty... you will just as anybody else and Im sure they will communicate with you to let you know that you have had a spammer and ask you to remedy it. If the problem persists then they would likely terminate you (with proper notice of course).

Regards and whatnot,

Mike

Yeah, I got an email within minutes from RackShack with info about accessing my RaQ. I was great.

I signup with them. I talked with their sales team and they said they as for users sending spam they will give you 24 hours to fix the problem. I don't think thats bad.
