View Full Version : Blogging Script Recommendations
BillBnntt 05-25-2008, 08:36 PM Hello - I just signed up for my first domain and hosting and I was looking at setting up my own blog. I'm pretty new to hosting and stuff so I was looking for some advice on which script I should use - it will just be me making posts on the blog.
My ultimate goal is to open/start/own a datacenter so I registered DataCenterDream.com which I felt was appropriate. Hopefully I can learn what I need to learn and make the appropriate contacts over the next few years - but you have to start somewhere!
Thanks ahead of time for any help and/or suggestions that you may have to offer.

most used and the best
you also have nucleus.
BillBnntt 05-25-2008, 08:48 PM I'm aware of wordpress, I was primarily wanting to know if there were any others out there that I should look into?
And thanks for moving the thread, I was not sure where to post it.
teachforjune-Scott 05-25-2008, 09:41 PM why look into anything else? wordpress is THE blogging system. It used to be moveabletype, but wordpress took them by storm and now they are number two. what I don't like about moveabletype is that you have to generate the pages every time you make a change. This puts less resources when users visit the site, but I prefer dynamic pages that wordpress produces. Those are the top two and everything else is far, far behind (in my humble opinion). But again, why would you consider anything else?
BillBnntt 05-26-2008, 12:00 AM I went ahead and set up wordpress, it seems fairly straightforward.
Although I couldn't find a theme I really liked, but the one I managed to find is good enough for now.
teachforjune-Scott 05-26-2008, 12:08 AM It's very simple to design your own theme and then implement it on wordpress. Just create your design in fireworks or photshop then split it up into header, content, sidebar, footer, etc.
Next write your xhtml page and then replace the filler content with wp template tags. It's pretty easy to do and that way your design will be your own.

CoderJosh 05-26-2008, 05:13 AM I think it was the right decision to choose WordPress, I'd have recommended it as well. It's very flexible and can be customized fairly easy. Concerning the theme, just start with some theme that roughly fits your expectations and make changes to it as needed. Later on you can create your dream theme from scratch, if you really want to.
BillBnntt 05-26-2008, 05:34 AM I see my theme having something to do with grass like a nice green pasture or something having to do with water/eco-friendly. I ultimately would like to open an as-eco-friendly datacenter as possible.
CoderJosh 05-26-2008, 02:07 PM That makes a lot of sense, in my opinion: Besides the eco-benefit, being eco-friendly also attracts a growing number of customers. At least one of the leading data centers in Germany (Hetzner, http://www.hetzner.de) already advertises the fact that they use "100% eco-friendly electricity" as well as "eco-friendly hardware" in a very visible way.
Mekhu 05-26-2008, 11:34 PM Bill, I'm not sure how good of a designer you are but I've seen some absolutely jaw-dropping blog themes for wordpress (unique) sell on this forum and www.sitepoint.com
You might want to consider that. Just a thought :)
BillBnntt 05-26-2008, 11:48 PM I'm trying to stay relatively cheap, I am not amazing with making web pages, I made one or two back in the 90s for Zelda!
I'll try throwing my own theme together. :)
