Are any of you running a game server on you dedicated? If so how much ram does it need? How many mhz?

I set up a UT (Unreal Tournament) server once but it was on a LAN, I don't understand how people can aford the bandwidth required on the internet. It only had a few people on it and loads of bots. It ran fine on 500MHz and 64MB RAM. Load wasn't much but it used more than half the RAM. What most games server hosts do is put loads of UT servers on 1 machine (on different ports) and have dual processor and 512MB/1GB RAM.

What I would say to you should do is look for a site to do with the game you are interested in and look for a server admin page, that is how I found out what spec I needed for a UT server.

Questions to people that might/are hosting gaming servers.

What game are you thinking of setting a server up for?
How can you aford the bandwidth used for it?

If anyone has loads of free bandwidth and a free server and wants a UT server setup on it let me know :D

The game server would be a Counter Strike server. How much bandwidth did it use?

I run a public TFC Game Server 24/7 Here are the results of bandwidth it uses. As you can see bandwidth usage is outrageous.

I don't know, the LED on the 100Mbit switch it was connected to kept flickering. I didn't check as it was on a LAN and it didn't matter but I think in the region of 56-100kbit/s per user (it can be capped with UT), some of that figure is in and some out. It will work on 56k modems though but the play is much worse (and it isn't just the ping).

I play on other peoples internet servers with 16+ players. I have no idea how they afford the bandwidth (I don't pay them anything) but it's great fun :)
