View Full Version : Buying a Gameserver Dedi => Help!
Nitrojan 05-22-2008, 03:34 PM Ok, I'm thinking about buying a dedicated server solely for Gameserver and Vent hosting however I am still on the look for the best deal!
Im looking for a dedi in the UK with a low ping, lots of RAM, lots of Bandwidth.. Just basically, everything that I need in order to successfully host gameservers.
If you guys could help me out here and let me know if you have seen any good deals about specialised with gameservers I would be very grateful!
Many thanks,
Adam
ComplexDrive 05-22-2008, 03:39 PM Set a budget that you can afford, then find a provider who will match your budget with service, support and network connectivity you need.
Nitrojan 05-22-2008, 03:40 PM Budget is around the £100 a month mark
Jona102190 05-22-2008, 04:04 PM What game? how many slots? how many servers? how many vent slots?
Nitrojan 05-22-2008, 04:06 PM A variety of games.. (Steam games mainly)..
Hoping to host gameservers up to something like 32 slots @ 100tick.
Vent slots.. as many as possible.
It's ok if the budget goes over £100 a bit.. But not too much :P
Basically.. im looking for the best offer for a low ping, high bandwidth gameserver dedi :)
[LRC]Lloyd 05-22-2008, 04:45 PM WIth your Ventrilo hopes, you will need appropriate licensing if you wish to sell them direct.
Ventrilo Licensing is very strict indeed, they have very specific requirements, and don't seem to be accepting any new providers recently.
You may want to look into Ventrilo Reselling.
Searching the forum for Ventrilo should update you on what i mean. (Try this thread for starters: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=690838&highlight=ventrilo)
With regards to your budget, are you including Control Panel licensing fee's in that? (Such as TCAdmin) Have you thought about how you are going to host your website? Are you going to use a specific company for web site hosting or plan to host of the same box?
You'll probably find your looking at around a Dualcore w/ 2GB RAM for £100, especially in the UK.
Dave Parish 05-22-2008, 04:52 PM you charging per slot or will each GS come with a predetermined amount of slots, like a package deal?
Nitrojan 05-22-2008, 04:55 PM Yeah, although I did see some xeon's at INX-Gaming and Poundhost, and yeah, I'll probably become a vent reseller.
Charging per slot :]
[LRC]Lloyd 05-22-2008, 05:02 PM Yeah, Poundhost only offer 2GB as standard though, and have £160+ plus setup fee's on increasing the RAM.
And, as far as i am aware INX only provide 1GB Ram in there monthly price. I cannot comment on there upgrade costs.
Games like COD2 and COD4 can demand alot of RAM with popular servers. COD4 uses around 256MB alone if the server is used regularly.
Going back to your initial post, where networks and ping times are concerned, most dedicated server providers such as INX, PoundHost, KC are all located in the BlueSqare Datacenters, either House or Bluesquare 2, therefore you shouldn't have much to worry about latency side.
Does your £100 budget include TCAdmin costs, and billing system costs? WHMCS/Modernbill etc.
Nitrojan 05-22-2008, 05:09 PM Nope, just server.
[LRC]Lloyd 05-22-2008, 05:16 PM You'd definatly get something around the dualcore mark, possibly with 4GB Ram depending on who you go with.
For the X3220 Xeon's or Intel Q6600's with 8GB Ram, your looking anywhere between the £150-£190 budget mark.
Do some research and and check both the WHT Offers Forum, and the TCAdmin Offers board aswell.
We have some new servers going in this weekend/early next week. Time is everything :)
There's nothing stopping you getting your website and billing system configured before you go ahead and purchase the gaming dedicated server. If your 100% certain you want to go ahead with setting up a GSP company. Its a very demanding industry nowadays, and i've said in one of my posts on this forum today, don't be surprised if you get a 12 year old kid stealing there parents credit card to buy a game server, and then the parents trying to claim there money back, especially via Paypal.
Paypal doesn't seem to protect sellers as much as they claim. ;)
Nitrojan 05-22-2008, 05:38 PM Yeah, lol have to take these things into consideration.
Thanks for the advice :P

As a game server host myself, I would definately advise either: www.cyberneticservers.co.uk and www.alpha-networks.co.uk. I have been a customer of both and the standards are beyond good. Both are on networks dedicated to gaming servers.
Nitrojan 05-22-2008, 05:41 PM Ah ha! Thanks for that.. I'll take a look :)
Energizer Bunny 05-23-2008, 12:47 AM For a Steam server and 32 slots should be feasible on a 2 gig 3 ghz p4 machine with 100mbps uplink atleast.
Should give you lag free gameplay, but if you want some heavy game like maybe BF2 a core duo or quad core will perform best.
RWMedia 05-23-2008, 06:19 AM i saw crissic and they sell Dual XEON's for cheap but us based!
Nitrojan 05-23-2008, 11:52 AM Yeah, I noticed that.. You see, I'm looking for UK based mainly for low latency.
[LRC]Lloyd 05-23-2008, 06:33 PM As the OP stated he was going to rent serves, the P4 wouldn't really be sustainable for his requirements, although it would perfectly stable as a dedicated clan server.
Out of the two companies sparky recommends, i would 100% choose Alpha Networks, although i do advise you e-mail them before hand as they don't always update there website with stock. ;)
