The domain will expire on 31st this month but it is no longer listed in our reseller account now. Called Enom and being informed that we no longer can renew it? Since we can't auto renew it now, we still eligible to renew it manually, correct? ENOM has took out the domain from our control before the expire date!! How should i go about it? Anybody can advise? This is the 2nd time it happened with ENOM!

When i click on the domain in the our reseller control panel, it show this message:-

"The domain xxxxxx.xxx (ID: *******) is not registered at this registrar."

Service Renewal Date* Expire Date Description
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Registration 05-20-2008 05-31-2008 ***********

* Due to registry requirements, these domain names need to be set to auto-renew prior to the renewal date or the domain will be deleted upon expiration.

Have you contacted Enom about this?

I've had to contact them a few times when i've needed support and they were very good.

Contacted them by phone and being informed that we could not renew the domain anymore!!! Based on the info given, what is your opinion? IMO, i look like an act of domain hijacking.

Who is the registrar listed on the WHOIS?

It's foreign domain and the registrar is no longer under ENOM is i interpret the WHOIS information correctly. However, the email address listed in the WHOIS still belong to us. Anybody know where to look for WHOIS info for Japanese domain in English language?

Sounds like someone transferred your domain to another registrar.

Nobody from our side receive or approve any transfer before. The admin email address belong to us. So, i can rule out transfer for this case.

Can i lodge a report to ICANN? The domain is not expired yet and I'm still the owner legally, am i right?

I don't think it's Enom fault here. All this should have been done well ahead of time. You shouldn't wait for the last few days to renew a valuable domain name.

Er, so? It is not the 31st yet.

... but it doesn't show the registrar information

That pretty much tells you what needs to be sorted out.

I guess the problem here is that it's a ccTLD and not a gTLD where the rules can be completely different.

With many gTLDs you don't get redemption periods and things like that. The domains get automatically renewed and there is no cancel of renewal to get the renewal fee back. There can also be a notice period how many days before expiry the registrar has to cancel the domain (therefore you have to tell your registrar before that date that you want to renew the domain). I guess that's what happened in this case. I'm sure everything is explained in details in the TOS or in the TLD agreement which you have with enom.
Not just enom has to know the rules, also you as a reseller must know the rules and the agreements you sign. You have to know the products you are reselling.

Your domain is not stolen, it is suspended because you didn't renew it in the required time frame
.jp domains have some restrictions. They do not have grace etc. periods, and you have to renew them XX days before they expire. If you don't they will be suspended.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do ATM. You have to wait about 1 month until suspension is released. Then domain name will be available for registration again.

Good thing is, no one is rushing to register expired .jp domains because they are very expensive. So, if your domain is not a very valuable one, the chances you can re-register it quite high.

Is there any written T&C for this?

Nope, I coulnd't find one. I learned by experience like you :)
At least there are no documents about the renew dates. But they say you HAVE TO set auto-renewal ON. That is the requirement for .jp domains.

Enom really sucks at handling .jp domains anyway. I advise you to move them to a local registrar in Japan.

Let's calm down for a minute. As one of the largest registrars worldwide, do you really think that enom is interested in STEALING a single domain from a customer???

We have renewed the domain through our counter part in Japan. Enom suck...they can't even provide assistance to renew it and the "grace" period for renewal is BS. AGAIN, i need to ask somebody from Japan to transfer and renew it for us instead of going through the registrar the registered the domain. I guess we would have lost the domain is we rely on ENOM for the renewal.

Well godaddy is bigger than them and did that with familyalbum.com :P

How much is a .jp domain for japanese ppl?

Because the relations with Snapnames, i think is more probable in ENOM than Godaddy, and heard sometime ago comments about they really dont drop some "good domains", instead assign to other users. I heard that two times of a well know friends, who cant renew and a month later is in other people hands, with the same dates.

I have with enom only three domains and for specific reasons.

In local registrars, I can register a .jp for as low as 3,500 JPY, around 33 USD.

I can't understand why ccTLD are so expensive, and even more expensive when registered outside of the country.

I can register .ws for less than $10 on some registrars, and on others it costs $40!

I think the base cost for a ccTLD is determined by the country, and then registrars can charge above that. Nothing illegal about that.

Well even With Enom, you have to provide the prefecture you are living. So you just selected a random fake address?

In the end, they have a requirement for .jp domains: "Auto renew must be turned on". And yours was off.
While I hate their handling of .jp domains as much as you, you have no case against them.

Just in passing, it's the same with .eu
but at least enom can now handle .eu transfers.

The problem here is Enom offer little to no assistance to renew or redeem the domain. Phone calls and support tickets are being replied with the gesture of, "I can't help you, you go and figure out yourself". Yes, and with a little luck and experience we figured it out ourself. The question here is, why we as the end user can renew it with somebody else but Enom as the registrar for our domain offer no help in getting the domain name up? Read my words...they OFFER NO HELP at all.

That's why Enom starts to want only big resellers, which understand what they resell.
But Enom only has the problem that they resell to many extensions where they have no idea, I'm pretty sure they have almost no jp domains and it is just to much work for them to figure out how they really work. For exotic domains it looks like it's the best to go with a local company or be sure to understand the rules and they way your registrar implemented them are completely understood by you.

Not to defend Enom, but probably they really cannot help you because they too are tied to JPNIC's regulations.
