Hi

I hope i'm posting this in the right forum. As a heads up, I'm just starting out and no practically nothing in the field of web hosting. I live within the US and travel abroad monthly. I am in search of a service similar to personalVPN offered by this company http://www.witopia.net/personalmore.html which is an ok price. The problem is that there service isn't meant for somewhat bandwidth intensive services.

To make sense of what I wrote above, i am looking for a way that will allow me to access a US ip address and not have to spend a fortune in the process. This http://www.100mbit.co.uk/firewallskip_order_now.php looks like exactly what I want but at the current exchange rate it a bit too much. Would I be better off setting up my own VPN tunnel and if so "HOW" (because I have no clue where to begin). I'm sure I can find many willing that are in need of this service, and if its possible at a low price it would be real crowd please.

Thanks, Josh

Let me guess, you want to watch US tv online?

Get a cheap VPS somewhere in the US and setup OpenVPN.

A cheap VPS and Squid would work.

Is there any VPS that you recommend for this scenario .

And what is squid.

Have a search in the offers section for providers that allow proxy servers.

Squid is a proxy server that can sit in between you and the website your surfing. You request the page from squid, squid gets it from the website and gives it to your browser (look under - edit, preferences, network or similar on your web browswer as to where you specify your proxy server).

Normally, when you request a webpage, information about your IP address etc can be included in the HTTP request - it's possible to strip out these headers with Squid.

If you are thinking about using it to watch US TV you'll probably need to ensure that your PC is in the correct timezone.

Getting a VPS in the U.S. is a good idea indeed, as this allows you to tunnel all your traffic through the VPS and you shouldn't have to worry about the bandwidth.

Instead of using a proxy server like Squid, you might want to use OpenVPN, as this allows you to also tunnel other protocols than http.

I must say I've never used OpenVPN.

So, if tunneling your traffic through a US VPS running OpenVPN you go to here - http://whatismyipaddress.com/ - does it detect the IP address of your VPS?

I believe http://anchorfree.com/downloads/hotspot-shield/ is a free VPN tunnel service that gives a US ip.

Yes. Everything, including web browsing, will be tunneling through the VPN as if the request came from the VPS.

Would I be better off going with this company's http://www.witopia.net/personalmore.html personal vpn. Its 40 dollars a year, could I beat that proce setting up my own.

Thanks for all your replies

I think you cannot beat $40 per year by setting up your own OpenVPN on a VPS, but of course your own VPS would give you many additional opportunities you might find useful.

"at the current exchange rate" £4.95 = $10 USD
witopia is $40...
are you expecting to find this service free?
