Hey guys/gals
Is it wrong to have a server running a Gui like ubuntu, A mate said that there is no harm in it at all the reasson why people use the command line is to show off there skills, In away I agree with him as windows servers have UI, so whats the harm in using one with linux? I can understand for performance issues but besides that I dont no why? if you have the money you are going to invest it in a high end server anyway so performance should not really matter, U would only need to use the Ui for quick configs and troubleshooting etc...

There are some things you won't be able to do even if you have a GUI, you'll still be opening up a console and using text based commands to do certain things.

If the server is being used for webhosting, then as a general rule of thumb, a GUI really shouldnt be used/loaded.
Everything should be done via command line (SSH) IMHO.
If your going to have a NEED to use a GUI, you really shouldn't be using it for hosting, as thats what a control panel like Plesk or cPanel is for.
Thats my opinion anyway.

A GUI really isn't needed as someone stated as most of your commands will be done over the internet via SSH or using something like cPanel/WHM.
There's almost no need for a GUI at all in the hosting realm.

No harm, other than it takes up resources. One thing I can say though, Ubuntu's GUI is really geared to be a windows competitor desktop, not really a server control panel. You're gonna still have to use the command line a fair amount. Its not really about showing off your skills, its just how things operate in the linux world. I'm sure there are some nice server tools for linux GUIs out there. Really I'd say its preference.

Unlike with Windows Server there are no admin tools with a Ubuntu Desktop. Because of this you would need to use the command line anyway.
I know of some for Samba (Windows file sharing) and proFTPd, but other than that there are none to my knowledge.
Using a GUI uses up unnecessary resources which, as you say shouldn't matter - it does as it reduces the amount of CPU cycles and RAM available for you to use/sell etc.
If someone really feels it is just a way to show off their skills then I would imagine that they have not used Linux in any real depth, or are comparing it to running a Windows Server.
